Which Oil Cooler. How many rows? Why?
Hey guys,
I am a proud new owner of a fully loaded 2012 Nissan 370Z Roadster. I previously has a 2009 Base Coupe. Anyway, I have heard many things on which oil cooler to user (I am sure this is a popular question) I will typically go to a track day 2-3 times a year. My last car I took bone stock to a track and it was fine until the last 2 heats and it began to go into limp mode. Some sessions I went full power without an oil cooler and it was ok. Probably not smart though. These sessions are 20 minutes long. I only go during winter and cold days (60-70 degrees). Which Oil cooler would be best for my needs? People keep saying a 34 row only, others say a 25 row will be ok for occasional track day use. Thoughts? Thanks Guys! |

You can partially cover an oversized oil cooler if it's not getting up to temp in the winter. You can't add rows if it's running too hot during the summer.

Ive been running a 25 row since the beginning and while it helped a ton, I was still constantly annoyed with climbing oil temps on even slightly warm days. A new oil cooler setup is part of this rounds updates.
I cant even think of a reason not to get a 34 instead... and I am sure that the only reason I did a 25 is because it was just what I always used as my previous cars did fine with a 25. |

Not 19 too small will hardly do anything for $50 more get the 25 row. The 34 row is for F.I. But whatever you get, get the sterab or mocal sandwich plate as in the premium brand bc the Stillen version plate sucked! The Stillen cooler is awesome for the price. If I could do it again maybe Z1 or even fast intentions but Fi is $$$$$

Hell just read ur going to the track a lot so go with 34 row duhhhh. For DD the 25 yet again your going on cool days so it really is a toss up. Look into fast intentions today and ask tony for a Christmas discount

I'm using a 19 row with lower fan settings 185/195/205 and I haven't seen anything over 205 in the summer. I mostly hover around 195.

I have 25 row setrab. Haven't wanted for a bigger one yet. I do about 4-6 track days a year including drift events which means engine is revving high without much airflow running over the blades. I've also been at willow during 110deg weather, Car hasn't gone into limp mode yet.
I suppose if I really wanted to future proof everything I'dgo for the 34 but there's no real need in my opinion now. Either one will suit your needs.

Oh with the 24 row I'm usually hovering at 240F after a session before cool down lap. External temp doesn't seem to make much difference on whether or not I hit that temperature, it just takes a little longer if it's cold.

It's easy to limit the cooling by adding a block off plate but adding cooling obviously can't be done unless you replace the cooler. This was my logic for going with a 34R cooler.
fwiw the car is used for autoX

The 25 Row works perfectly for me. I haven't seen my temps go above 240F in the Texas Heat on the track.
I do recommend the thermostatic plate if you DD the car. I'm having trouble getting my car up to temp in anything below 60F ambient. |

If you track or even thinking about it. 34 row.

I track and run a 25 row in NC, it's done fine. Oil temps get to about 220/230 max. That being said it wouldn't hurt to go larger (unless it blocks off the radiator too much). With the 25 and an thermostatic plate I still have to block it off in the winter for the OEM gauge to read anything.
