Engine making weird noise help?

Hello everyone,
I'm officially a new 370z Owner.
Just got it last weekend.
I just noticed this noise when in idle.
I can barely hear it in idle, and it gets a bit louder as the RPM goes a bit higher until it's a bit high and too loud to notice the noise.
Is this normal?

Thanks in advance guys.

Not sure if it's cause I'm on an iPad but I wasn't able to view the vid. Can you describe the noise. I know when I first got my Z I thought something may be wrong until I read how how audible the valvetrain is on our cars. I also notice a slight knocking upon a cold start up if I don't let the car warm up before I leave.

Sounds like valvetrain noise to me but it's difficult to tell from a cell phone video.

When was the last time you changed the oil/filter? Did you use the proper oil? Supposedly, Nissan's ester oil will help quiet the valvetrain. Might be worth a try.

I would tend to agree with SouthArk. It sounds a little chattier than my Z but not excessively so.

I just changed my oil last night to Mobile1. 2 days ago.
Is it something I should be concerned....???

I don't here anything abnormal either. Like SouthArk said maybe try Nissan's ester oil I use it in my Z and it seems to help the valve chatter.

As long as you used the correct viscosity, there should be no problem. If you hadn't changed the oil in a while, that would have been one of my first suggestions.

Some oils are "quieter" than others. Look through some of the many oil threads on this site and see what others have to say.

Find another Z or two to listen to before panicking.

Thanks guys! Will do!

under what conditions did you record the video?
eg. engine warmed up on its own idling from a cold start, immediately after thrashing it, etc?

It sounds pretty normal to me. Like Southark said, some oils make this engine operate quieter than other oils. Currently i am using Valvoline 5w30 Synpower MST and it gets very chattery after i've been giving it some stick (after fully warming up the motor). To the point where it will alarm most unsuspecting owners because it sort of sounds like a badass knocking. I've used Nulon full synthetic which is an Aussie product and this has a moly additive in it. It made the engine run very very quietly even after thrashing it a bit. Castrol Edge with titanium fluid strength technology also gave me pleasant results. to be honest, the Valvoline was chucked in as a quick experimental oil because it was on special and i thought why not? I dont have any lab test results but i personally wouldnt think twice about picking the Valvoline again.

but let's not let this thread turn into another oil debate

Sounds ok to me but if the noise is an undertone maybe I can't hear it

It's actually louder than my cousins 350z... I'm just worried because I'm a new owner. Basic used car concerns haha. I used Mobile 1. But probably gonna give it a shot on Edge a try.

I'm sure it's nothing any device can't hear, I'm on my iPhone6 and I could hear it fine. It's that lil noise it makes at Idle and lower RPM revving in Neutral. It's hard for me to hear other nissans because I'm the only 370z in town lol

I'll when it's fully warmed up, its a bit louder.
You think if I bring this to Project X in Chicago they could figure it out? I'm live an hourish away

SouthArk370Z 10-23-2014 04:42 PM

Any of the top brands of oil should work well in a DD. I'd give the Nissan Ester a try - from what I've read, it does the best at keeping the valves quiet.

If the Project X folks have any experience with 370Zs, they should be able to tell you if it's normal or not.

Why would you do that? It's fine. VVEL clatters. Get used to it. They all do that.
