Default Engine codes P2096 and P2098

I installed my FI CBE and HFC's the other day on my 2014 sport touring. I have the Z1 smooth tubes and K&N filters. After about 100 miles the engine codes came up saying it was too lean post cat's. The front and rear 02 sensors are working and are not lazy when I read them on my OBDPro monitor. Since the HFC's have the anti fouling tubes is this creating a dead spot in the exhaust so that the sensor is not seeing the proper changes?. The car only has 7100km's. Has anyone cut the antifouling tubes off and welded a bung to pace the sensor directly into the exhaust stream and if so did it work?. I have 4 years left on the warranty and don't want to do a tune and turn them off. I have now taken the HFC's off and reinstalled the stock cats and cleared the codes. They have not returned in over 400 km's. Is there another fix that might work to help the sensors? Thanks Terry

Just get a tune. That should bring everything into line without turning anything off.

^^^ That... otherwise, you'll have to experiment with varying lengths and orientations of defoulers.

Some folks have claimed to use steel wool jammed in the defoulers to further slow down the gasses with success.

As for me, uprev was the only reliable fix.

EDIT: Yours is a 2014 -- it could be that Nissan changed the detection logic. Might be tougher to fool mechanically now.

Yeah Terry... I threw the same 2 codes you did a couple of weeks back. I have a 2014 Nismo w/ Stillen CAI/FI resonated test pipes and FI 18" resonated CBE. I got uprev'd tuned and about 100 miles afterwards I threw those same 2 codes. Just returned back to my tuner and he removed so no more check engine light. There's not many choices we have when we have 3 breather mods.... think you'll find here on the forums once you go beyond 2 breather mods you'll need a tune to make things right. The ECU can adapt somewhat but it's best just to do it right and get a tune.

Default thansk for the replies

If I go the tune way with Uprev and have to return to the dealer for any work then I'll loose the tune correct. Once the tech's hook up to Consult then I imagine my tune will be gone and they will find out the ecm has been tuned. I sort of see where this is going and will have to think about the HFC's versus the stock cats. I will be going forced induction in the future so I believe we need the stock cats for supercharging anyways ( according to stillen) . With the turbo setup ( I'll go boosted performance ) how does one keep the cats to meet the exhaust emissions?. Or does no one run the cats since they take up a lot of room and also remove a lot of heat energy from the exhaust stream. Thanks Terry

I've been running my tune for about 7 months now and just started throwing this code. Cleared it once thinking it was an anomaly but it showed up again within 200mi.

Several questions come to mind from this:

1. Is it still likely a tune issue?
2. Is it possible the sensor has been fouled? I did not immediately get a tune after installing them. Drove for several thousand miles before getting a tune.
3. What other diagnostic options do I have?
4. I do not hear any engine knocking and acceleration has been fine for the most part. Is this critical since I'm driving the car daily right now since my daily is in the shop (ironic...)

Thanks for any help.

So I thought I had solved the problem. I had a vacuum leak. Cleared code, drove for another 200 miles and the light came back on. Any ideas, guys?

I'm going to try cleaning MAFs tomorrow.

Any updates? I'm getting the same P2096 issue, FI HFC FI Catback, K&N drop-ins. Check engine light came on a few hundred miles after install. Reset and came back on after another few hundred miles.. Did a tune solve anyone's problem?

^^^ only those already stated.

It's not clear to me that dp3ngu1n had the detection logic turned off with his tune. That might have been the problem.

Any updates whether it's the defoulers or tune. Installed FI fatback 12" resonators and motordyne ART TP's and my Service engine soon light came on last night after about 500 miles and got the P2096 code.

I just installed hfcs, z1 headers, cai and did an Uprev tune and after 100 miles I got the same code. Will reach out to Z1 on Monday to check my options. Car feels amazing though.

Hey, guys. In the same boat here. Drop in filters, Berk HFC, Fast Intentions exhaust. Had an UpRev tune about 2,000 miles ago. Just started throwing the P2066 and P2098 codes.

Question--I cleared the codes for now, but I'm assuming they'll come back. I don't have to worry about passing inspection until 4/2018. If I clear the codes right before inspection, will it pass a smog test? Or are the codes "stored" in the ECU somewhere until the problem is actually fixed?
