is there a fix to fuel starvation?
I was reading a few posts in the past about this fuel starvation and thinking 'these guys must be running so low on fuel to save weight'.
apparently it is due to the shape of fuel tank and I cant believe nissan is doing nothing to fix this issue. is there any fix to this? is there any baffle plate or something that can be easily added? searching doenst seem to get me a clear answer other than just saying 'add more fuel and forget' |
Phunk is a forum sponsor and has a product that is probably your best solution. You want the Road Race Fuel Pump in this link http://www.the370z.com/engine-drivet...-overview.html
Your only easy option is to keep the tank full. Yes, it is a terrible design by Nissan :ugh2: |
Is there a fix to fuel starvation? PUMP GAS!
|
Mine will do it with 3/4 tank of gas on Sebring turn 17 and CJM is really the only proven option. I just ordered mine, I'm sick of filling up after every session.
|
how disappointing, so its not something baffle or extending the fuel pickup to the center and etc can fix?
I wonder how it looks like inside the tank hmm |
Bunch of us here have phunks kit. It flat out works.

I didn't expect that when I clicked the link |
Only solution to the problem.

You can also just throw these puppies into the gas tank. It should buy you a few more laps

Its actually a pretty typical over-all fuel tank shape found in many cars. The lack of baffles combined with the non-existent displacement of the fuel pump module surge canister, and the lethargic recovery of fuel via a return venturi is why the 370z suffers starvation worse than other vehicles.
I have posted several times recommending people to attempt putting some fuel cell foam in the center of the tank. Not sure why nobody wants to try it! It wont work as well as my road race pump, but it may or may not offer considerable improvement. |

Mine is fixed now, I picked the car up this morning with it's new CJM fuel system installed!
|
(Head in Hands)...... This reminds me of Dodge. You have to fix the stupid stuff they did to be able to really enjoy the vehicle. Nissan has not been this bad in the past. I personally hate the no return fuel systems.
|
Fixed that also!

will dual pumps work as well?
|
Dual pumps won't contribute to controlling fuel placement inside the tank. You need a baffle or surge system to be integrated or to eliminate the space the fuel has to travel inside.
|
I ran these in my rock-crawler (full tube chassis/rock racer).
Auto Performance Engineering - Walbro fuel pick-ups Had a Jeg's cell with foam...Foam broke down and clogged my fuel system at the filter. With the foam out, I would have serious starvation issues at the extreme angles found during crawling. The solution, and cheap at that, was the fuel pickups. I didn't think they would work, but many in the competitive crawling circles run these. I NEVER had a starvation issue again! |
Those are really cool. A bit tricky to integrate to the 370z fuel pump modules... but with some ingenuity and effort I think it could be done.

Great idea. So buy two of those and have them pickup fuel from each side?
|
bleunetizen: I ran 4 of them...One for each corner of the cell. On tube directly to the pickup tube off the pump. I put them on standard 3/8ths fuel line so they could move around a bit at different angles. I had my crawler flopped over on its side 90deg, engine still running, and full fuel pressure. I've had the crawler at over 60 deg vertical (up and down) and never a hick-up with fueling. The things simply WORK. Such a silly simple design too.
Installing took all of about 20 minutes once the pump was out of the cell. Of course dropping the Z tank looks like a chore, but once out, adapting the pucks would be cake. I think all you would need is two (one on each side). I had mine in my cell for years. Nary a problem. After I could trust them on extreme angles, I forgot they were there. Keep in mind I found this solution well after I tried all kinds of measures...Holley pusher pumps, 1/2 gal reservoir, etc. Then 4 pucks and $100 later I never had a problem again (could have got away with two I'm sure). Nolakrewe: I ran a Hendrix tube chassis, Rover 3.9V8, Atlas, built 60's, King 16" x 2.5 coil-overs, bla, bla, bla...:) Took me 3 years to build but it was a blast. Sold it to buy the Nismo! LOL! |
So how does the stock pump pick up fuel? Am I mental or is it as simple as Y-ing into that and throwing two of the aforementioned pucks into the tank?
|
In theory, yes it is that simple. In practice, you will find it not quite so simple. The stock fuel pump module does not just have a hose barb waiting to connect external pickups to. You will need to replace the stock pump with a pump that has the proper connection interface or can be adapted to such, and you will have to create a way to mount that pump to the module. You will have to cut away area of the pump module to run the hose from the pump to the pickups. You will have to find a way to secure the pickups to the floor of the fuel tank.
|
I think it should be able to use the existing pump but replace the stock pickup with longer lines and those ones?
Hopefully doable without ripping the tank off the car.. |
Ouch

There would be no advantage to dropping the tank out of the car. The access panels are in the interior behind the seats. There would be no extra access by removing the tank from the car. |

So I'm thinking this can be the least expensive and most effective means of getting rid of our fuel starvation issue.

is there a fix to fuel starvation?

very interested in what the pros that know more about our gas tank and the internals think? this looks like a decent option tho. just gotta figure out what the inside of the tank is like to see how the mat would lay or best place to magnet it down. also you can use 2 mats, one on either side with a T fitting EDIT: seems there is already info on the form saying this wont really work without a ton a custom modification. |

yeah I just read them too, looks like u have to get a fuel pump and a lot of custom work. not impossible tho |
