Coolant Question
 

Hi I have a 2010 Nismo and was wondering if I can use Prestone 50/50 mix coolant or do I have to use the one from the dealership ? Also how much is needed ?

Check the owners manual, it will tell you what is required. I would have to read myself to double check. Fluid types can change from car to car.

I have a gallon of the OEM stuff, and the container says "50/50 PreDiluted". You will be fine with virtually any 50/50 mix. No need to get it from the dealer.

In regards to quantity, are you refilling the whole tank or just topping it off?

The whole system is 9 qt (8.5 L) for AT and 9-1/8 qt (8.6 L) for MT (including reservoir tank). The reservoir tank is 7/8 qt (0.8 L) for reference.

dont use aftermarket coolant. im all for aftermarket liquids, but coolant is one thing ill pay a little extra for OEM. the nissan factory coolant is 50/50 prediluted "blue" coolant. costs about 30bucks for a gallon jug i believe. all the dealerships should have it on hand. i usually buy 2 when i do a drain and refill.

chops, any particular reason why you recommend not using aftermarket coolant? I noticed that this fluid in the FSM says "or equivalent". Along with the Power Steering Fluid and Brake/Clutch fluid, these are the only ones that indicate an equivalent alternative is appropriate.

Back in The Good Ole Days, all antifreezes were the same - ethylene glycol and some silicates. Not so much nowadays. If you can't find an appropriate "or equiv", go with the OEM stuff. The Nissan-branded stuff is expensive but you don't need a lot and you don't need it often; splurge a little.

southark is right below. as for power steering fluid, brake/clutch fluid, totally go aftermarket. i use redline D6 ATF for power steering fluid, motul rbf600 for brake and clutch fluid, redline 75w90 for differential fluid, redline mt-85 for transmisson fluid, and pennzoil ultra platinum 10w-30/5w-30 for engine oil

southark is on point. theres too many different formulations because of the different metals and materials all the OEM's use, their own formulations will 100% prevent problems such as rusting, clogging... etc etc

i use oem coolant as well... just to be safe.

but im sure if mr.jar has had good experience with the coolant of his choice, it's safe to use as well.

I use the Prestone 50/50. It works fine.

FYI, Nissan doesn't make coolant. Even though it says "Nissan", it's still aftermarket. It's not unicorn blood.

Makes sense to me. I use identical fluids except I run Mobil 1 5W-30 for engine oil.

I actually use the OEM coolant. I was just wondering why not use cheap aftermarket coolant. And I got my answer. Some I'm sure are fine, but they're not all the same.

the prestone 50/50 mix all will work fine you can mix blue with green or green compatible fluid but not with the orange dexcool. I am unsure if yellow ford long life is compatible. the only downside to using the prestone is you will need to change it out sooner than the nissan blue long life. For the record my car came from the factory with green coolant.
