Default oil change recommendations?

Any recommendations for oil changes? My 2012 370z has 8k miles, not driven too hard and ready for an oil change. i'm the second owner, oil last changed at 4k. I’m seriously thinking of not going to a nissan dealer and trying one of 2 shops in town that I’ve used before. One I’m more familiar with and trust more but hasn’t worked on a 370z. the other says he’s worked on z’s before but I don’t know him as much. plus his parking lot is tight and I’m a dingaphobic. should I pick up a Nissan filter or let them choose? What oil types does everyone use? Synthetic? Weight? I know I should check my manual and I will.

Do it yourself.

There's nothing special about the Zs oil system that would make it necessary to find someone who has experience with the cars. The filter and drain bolt are on the bottom of the engine, not hidden somewhere like a Euro car.

Change your oil and filter every 5000Km.

Search, please!

Do it every 5000km, or 3000 miles, 3 months or less, synthetic 5w-30 or Nissan ester oil (also 5w-30). Nissan also recommends Mobil1 as an Ester alternative. RTFM.

In the end, the oil brand you choose is up you anyways. Just stay away from GTM products.

OMG more 3,000 miles posts! My head is going to EXPLODE! EXPLODE! Seriously...where are my 'not going to explode meds'?

3000 miles is marketing BS brought to you by the oil and auto service industries. There is zero need to change oil that early when using conventional let alone synthetic used in a daily driver. Period.

I think I'll start a list of just a few articles that have tried to debunk this myth...

http://www.edmunds.com/car-care/stop...-your-oil.html
http://autos.aol.com/article/3000-mi...ge-not-needed/
http://www.knowyouroil.com/articles/...under_fire.htm
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/m...e-myths-ov.htm
OMG JIFFY LUBE says is it bs...
http://business.time.com/2011/06/14/...ry-3000-miles/
GM lowers the interval to 5000 for a set of problem children...5k, not 3k.

Just don't forget to check your oil. You should CHECK your oil every month if not more.

Uh...how about using the oil, filter, and drain intervals that are recommended by the engine manufacturer?

blasphemy! Who actually reads the manual and follows the instructions of the people that built the car that know what they're talking about?

I check my oil every night, without fail unless I know I won't be driving the car the next day. But that's mostly because I installed my own turbo kit and am way more cautious.

NA I checked it every time I got gas. I believe you should pop the hood and check things out every time your at the pump. I mean you've got the five mins of nothing to do but wait.

So you're saying that our engines suck so bad that they need oil twice as often as a Ford? Wow...I'm selling today. What pieces of crap car we all have.

They recommend on standard oil 3750 miles for SEVERE conditions. 7500 miles for NORMAL. And once you put in synthetic all number bets are off.

You sir should take some meds too. Joking... you're right you should do it all the time. But if you can get someone to do it once a month I would call that a victory.

so no need for synthetic i guess. i'll probably just go with what the shop has for filter and oil brand. he'll know whats good. looks like 5w30. what about a washer? i think i read to change the washer in the owners manual. is there one? my old porsche used to have an o-ring and if that wasn't replaced with a new one it would leak.

You can get 5 quarts of Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w30 for $25 at Walmart. A filter should be <$10. The crush washer costs anywhere from $0.33-$1.

For the price of what you would likely spend on two oil changes, you can purchase a floor jack, jack stands, a ratchet, a 10mm socket, and a 14 mm socket from Harbor Freight. You now have everything you need to do an oil change yourself for little over $30

After discovering this, I never pay someone else to do oil changes. Its just too easy to DIY.
