Default a/c & effects from oil/trans coolers.

So I have a question to those of you running oil/trans coolers: do/will those after market coolers affect air conditioning?

situation: oil and trans cooler installed, a/c works perfectly fine and ice cold driving around city and short distances. after driving for about an hour, including some spirited driving, a/c starts fluctuating between warm (outside air temp) and slightly cool... then eventually is just warm/hot. While at a stop light a/c is cold, but then once i press on the gas and accelerate the a/c turns warm and stays warm as long as I'm on the gas. upon coming to a stop again and letting the car sit for a bit, the a/c eventually gets a little colder, but nowhere near as cold as it normally is. this happens regardless of recirculate or fresh air is used. fan speed makes no difference other than just blowing warm air in my face harder.

already scheduled apt. to get the a/c checked out, but the fact that sometimes it is ice cold tells me the freon is fine. my intial thought was that the oil/trans cooler are hot and blocking airflow up front and possibly that hot air is reducing the ability to properly work?

note: its been mid 90s in the afternoon here in FL, typically 50% humidity if not more. outside air temp is reading the heat coming off the black pavement usually about 100-110 in the mid afternoon.

Sounds like it might be a little low on R134a causing the evap. to freeze up. I beat if they do an evac and weigh, you will be low. They will also pull a vaccum on it and let it sit for 30min or so. It is a standard A/C service.

ok, thanks spooler.

also noticed this driving home. this is the highest ive ever seen. drove by a bank and the temp on the sign said 91 outside... ac wasn't fully cold and the outside temp sensor is obviously reading very wrong.... also for the sake of it I popped my hood, my engine coolant/antifreeze is just a little above the MIN line (car was hot, just drove for 25 mins... gonna add as much distilled water and mocool as I can tonight, once the car cools down again. I should be able to easily get away with about 70/25/5 water/antifreeze/mocool... we dont have to worry about freezing in the winter time here in FL, so I might as well add more water to keep the engine cooler.

but this is just crazy... idk... things seem a little weird since getting the oil/trans coolers put on.

@spooler. got serviced today, pressure was low so they did the evac and recharged.

Drove for an hour, air got hot again for a few mins and then back to cold... waste of $160 today. FML, looks like ill go back when I get a chance.

Sounds like you have a leak. They should have pulled a vacuum & monitored it for pressure increase after they evac'd before just charging it. I would take it back to them.

Had similar issue on My 98 Ranger. Freon was good. A/C mech said an interlock prevents A/C from coming on if engine too hot. Turns out my problem was thermostat was sticking and not opening all the way. Nice cheap fix. So could be thermostat or flaky temperature sensor thinking it is hotter than it is and forcing shutdown on A/C compressor.

Over 100 here in central Arkansas today and Z had no problem keeping it cool.

Hi. Sorry to hear you're having AC issues. Honestly since you said you installed an oil cooler and trans cooler it can be safe to say that your condenser is not getting enough air flow which cools the temperature of the refrigerant coming from the AC compressor. Your refrigerant is getting too hot and your ECU shuts down the compressor until temperatures regulator to avoid excessive pressure build up.

Several things to try and help:

Try moving the coolers around and/or installing a higher flowing fan to help pull air through.
Also remove any debris in front of the condenser.
Also make sure your lower engine cover is still installed (this helps create a negative pressure zone behind your radiator to aid in air flow.)

Good luck!
