Stillen Track Cooler + Mocal Thermo
I had my Stillen track oil cooler with a Mocal 180 degree sandwich plate installed yesterday. I had the opportunity to drive 30 miles home in Northern Virginia traffic (on I 66). The air temperature was around 80 degrees.
The first part of my drive was bumper to bumper traffic with an average speed around 20 mph. The car quickly began to heat up reaching around 160 before the Mocal began to open up. At that point the temperature slowly climbed. I watched as the temps climbed from 190 to 200 with a peak in heavy traffic of just below 210 degrees. Then... The traffic opened up and I was able to travel at speeds of 60mph to 80 mph in 5th gear (I purposely did not shift into 6th gear at any point). In open air, the temps began to rapidly fall resting around 190 degrees. No amount of 5th gear pushing would make the temperature needle budge. Normally, I would experience temps around 220 to 230 degrees. On a side note, I believe the outside ambient temperature sensor must be near the cooler. I know now that our temperature gauges only go up to 132 degrees. After that, all you get is a straight line. I wonder how this would affect an intake that breathes in front of the radiator (like the Stillen G3). Definitely would no longer be a cold air intake.

You're seeing about the same temps I am with my DIY cooler.
BTW the thermo plate is always metering some oil to the cooler to avoid thermal shock when the oil comes up to full temp. It fully opens at the 180 thermostatic set point. On the water temp gauge, yeah that is worthless. After 132-134 degrees there is no change until 212+. I need to look into the ambient temp sensor...Mine seems to read about 5 degrees cool when compared against other digital thermometers and the start up IAT temps (should be the same). Taking this into account, my in the bay intakes run very cool with the fang vents. Just a few degrees over ambient. The cooler should make little difference on a G3 but may up the temps fractionally with in the bay intakes as the hot air blows through the cooler, radiator and into the engine compartment.. Vent the back of the engine compartment to improve this flow. Last edited by Modshack; 09-23-2009 at 11:58 AM. |

How much oil capacity do you have now? I am running about 6.2 qts. I am running on Interstate about 195(outside about 90-93). I also like the fact that after putting on the injen intakes I now have the holes in the core support to direct more air into the engine compartment. One cool thing is, push it hard get the temp up to about 210-220, put the car in neutral(going about 70) and you can watch the temp drop. It really does cool the oil !

It really is like driving a different car not having to cringe every time I look at the oil temp gauge.
