Default M/T transfer case fluid change

Bought 3 quarts of Redline MT-85 and 2 quarts. of redline gear for rear diff. I've read over and over that 3 quarts is enough and I've spoken to Jon from Z1 when I ordered. During the change, no fluid overflowed from the fill hole. Should I be worried? Should I order another quart?

On a side note. It's a hell of a lot smoother now -- especially 1st and 2nd.

Hey mag_black,

How many miles on your 09? Did you change fluid to make 1 - 2 shift better? As far as fill I've always been told to fill until the fluid spills from the fill hole and then let it drain down to no drips and then put the fill plug/washer back in.
Of course how level the transmission is determines to a great degree how much fluid it takes, if the car is tilted then it will take more to fill it up if the tranny is tilted away from the fill hole.

44K and I changed it just for maintenance purposes. I knew it wasn't smooth, but I had no idea changing the fluid would make this much of a difference. Had I known, I would've done this awhile ago.

We stuck a pinky in the fill hole and could touch the fluid, but my mech felt that it could use a few more oz. He said the same thing, "you fill to the top and let it drain out". So I'm wondering if I should be worried about the few oz. it needs. I'll probably just get another qt and call it a day, but I also want to know if I can drive it around.

4th of July weekend and I can't drive my Z? I might die.

My 09 is at 22K and I'm thinking of changing mine just to mess with it for funzies. I would think that unless you're tracking the car that amount of fluid will be OK for DD. Hey, according to SOP, you're supposed to remove the top plug first (incase you drain it and the top fill plug won't be stuck). When you removed that one first, did fluid run out? If not, then it wasn't up to the hole full to begin with.

Factory Service Manual indicates thusly:

Manual transmission gear oil 2.83 liter, 5 pt
Genuine NISSAN Manual Transmission
Fluid (MTF) HQ Multi 75W-85 or API GL-4,
Viscosity SAE 75W-85 or 75W-90

Unfortunately, I did not remove the fill hole plug first. I wish I did.

The car is a lot smoother to drive now. I would make the switch to redline asap.
