Performance charactertics of the 370z... 3rd gear
Hey guys,
I'm noticing that the car really hauls *** through 1st and 2nd gear, but when getting into 3rd there is a bit of a loss in how much the car is pulling. Just curious what you guys think, or if you notice the same thing. And what you guys might have noticed improved this etc. I'm aware that every bolt on in the book and a tune would help to eliminate this, but also wondering if just something like the HFC's I have been considering would be the solution. It just feels a touch out of its powerband for a moment when getting into 3rd. I'm talking about full throttle 7500rpm shift from 2nd to 3rd here and winding out 3rd.

I have the most fun in 2 - 3. I don't know if it's just perceived difference but swapping in lightweight pulleys seemed to make me spin up faster in every gear, may help? Last edited by Bauran; 06-02-2014 at 03:52 PM. |

2-3 for me are my favorites, that and when i went on a cruise with a bunch 300zx's through missouri 6th was my favorite because i could power up hills when they had to be in 4th. haha

I have raced a few guys which are serious contenders... Maybe I am cutting a wicked reaction and 60 foot time, but I am leaving them behind or holding them of nicely in 1-2 then in 3rd i'm feeling them catch up or have the potential to go past me. All have been Higher power cars than mine, two are boosted heavily (RX7, and a GTR syline) one is LSX powered (05 C6 vert auto - stock) for reference... so maybe not much chance there..... but thats what I'm noticing.
This was of course all done on a closed course in Mexico.

But you said it they are more high power cars, so what do you expect. P.S.....all that land you would think Canada has closed courses.

I once raced an 05 gto on a closed course in mexico and he had a car on me at 130, he was auto so its not like he could screw that up after three runs.

The z is super competitive with just about anything up to 60 mph if not faster. To run against higher hp past 60 you need more power. Do a rolling start at 60 vs those and im sure you'll feel even slower.

W00T?
1st GEAR gets this car move'n. I've got single mass flywheel and 4.30 gears and can still shift to 2nd easily. Not for sure where this 1st gear is useless $h!+ is coming from. Maybe if your a 70+ old man that has slowed in his years and can't re-act to the tach.....LOL! Third gear ain't bad w/gears. Of coarse w/400+ crank horsies it would be better... |

But yup due to the torque multiplication of gearing, the amount of power you are sending to the wheels in 3rd gear is far far lower than second gear. The tires can only contain so much... so in the lower gears, high power cars cannot use all the extra power. |

Coming from a modded '13 WRX, I can honestly say these Z's feel like dogs in 1 and 2 compared to the WRX from a standstill, rolling is a different story. BUT... where those die in the high rpms of 1 and 2, 3rd especially, the Z just keeps on pumping.
