Did you try grabbing the filter with your hand and turning it?

A big pair of Channellocks (or equiv) has worked for me before. Grip close to the base of the filter. Try not to collapse the filter housing.
If all else fails, drive a long screwdriver through the filter. Make sure you have a BIG pan under the car.

When you put the new filter back on, put a little bit of oil on the gasket (the used oil works great) and only tighten hand tight. A good rule-of-thumb is to screw the filter on until the gasket just touches the engine and then an eighth to a quarter turn more. Check for leaks. Tighten ~1/16 of a turn as needed. Do that and it will be MUCH easier to remove the filter next time.
