You're not going to believe this...

Last week I ordered new brakes and a quaife LSD from z1 motor sports. Great guys, very helpful, fast shipping, excellent customer service. Just wow. And you should've heard them laugh out loud when **** rolled downhill...

I have a 2009 370Z NON-SPORT, automatic tranny with navigation. Got the ugly 18" rims, tiny brakes and open diff. Wait! Did I say open diff? Oh I'm sorry, no, I meant the ultra rare, super secret Viscous Limited Slip differential. Yeah because screw you Squall, we are Nissan and we don't like you, that's why.

Now I need new axle stubs...

But let's backtrack here, don't I have the non-sport? Shouldn't I have the open differential? What happened here? I bought the car brand spankin new, fresh out of the dealer doors, and now I have a VLSD, which I'm not supposed to have?

Can anyone explain this? Anyone have similar experience? My car is stuck up on the hoist and there's nothing we can do! Everything was performed correctly, when we told Z1 the stub was too long, we got the diagram and cut it down perfectly. And when Spencer asked for the pic of the diff, sh!t went giggles. Turned out I had a secret VLSD.

Your thoughts?

DEpointfive0 03-14-2014 06:17 PM

Um... I believe... You ordered one for the manual because you chose "without LSD" or whatever it says

Or check the PN, tell is what it is.

Also, are you SURE you have a VSLD? There is always a differential in the pumpkin.
Snap a pic of the outside back plate of your diff, and see if you have sport brakes, a spoiler, and the front chin spoiler.

DjSquall 03-14-2014 06:40 PM

Andrew, trust me lol We know the difference :) and yeah took all the pics, if I could upload it off my iPhone I would

I've read stories about how car manufacturers will sometimes install an "upgraded" part if they run out of the standard part and don't want to shut down the assembly line. But that was years ago and I imagine all car makers keep better inventory nowadays.

Wonka2581 03-14-2014 06:58 PM

Very strange...

VABAM 03-14-2014 07:11 PM

I just swapped my diff to a Quaife 2 days ago.
Just for grins, here are my pics.
I have a 09 with sport package so my factory diff is the LSD.
My Quaife is the Factory LSD version.

Fantastic Z 03-14-2014 07:42 PM

You'd be surprised how many things in the world SHOULD be a certain way but aren't. Can't even begin to describe the atrocity that is the assembly line for my company. Been trying to get **** changed for years.

They were extra. I actually didn't install the Quaife, my friend did (he is a mechanic that specializes in Zs) but I got to "help". I like turning wrenches on my car but there are some things that I let the professionals do.
He was ecstatic about the install because he didn't have to shim it. The backlash was perfect on the first try.

Totally right, I didn't even look where the OP was from. I think all the Canadians need to put "Canadia" as their location

Rep, good call

IDZRVIT 03-15-2014 07:41 AM

Here's another Canadian revelation - we don't have a BASE model up here. They're all Touring models.

DjSquall 03-15-2014 09:24 AM

Hopefully this is going to be the last surprise I get with building the car. I was so excited to have the quaife in and to have the car out today :(

birthday=ruined.

That's good to hear :) I helped with my install as well, it was a pita, but we had good fun.

Now tell me, how good is the quaife compared to the factory LSD? At least gimme something to look forward to lol.

Sorry, don't know yet.
Might be a few weeks until I do.
My Z is currently not "legal" to drive at the moment.
It is kind of missing a few things.

So in reality you just paid more money for a touring? I'd rather have the option to buy a base. Too bad cause a lot can be done to the car with an extra 3k! Oh Canadia! :p

Minivans have cloth interiors. You can get one for under $3k

Ghost116 09-13-2021 09:56 PM

Not sure what year you are talking about but my 2016 base came with open diff and I ordered it. Got a used 2018 vlsd from wrecked 2018 and switched them out for $625 CAD. Sold my original open diff for $450 CAD. $175 for vlsd makes sense and the car has much more traction. The vlsd fit perfectly and was easy to install. Torquing every bolt to factory spec took the longest amount of time.
