Transmission won't shift if . . . .

Help please. Has anyone experienced this:

I have a new 2014 370Z with automatic transmission that will go through ALL the gears just fine if:

1. I put the shift lever into D and just go, OR

2. I put the shift lever into the manual gate (left track), and use the paddle shifters to go through all the gears.

BUT if I put the shift lever into manual, and then try to shift to the next gear (up or down), USING THE SHIFT LEVER, the transmission position indicator light jumps from the gear number to D,
and transmission goes through the REST of the gears just fine in D, even though the shift lever is still in the manual track.

The car has less than 800 miles on it so it's under warranty.
There's obviously nothing wrong with the transmission itself.
So if this is caused by something simple, I'd rather correct it myself if possible.

Have any of you experienced or corrected this problem before???

Is there a thread on this problem somewhere???

I haven't experienced anything like this. I know there's a TSB on the 7AT from 2013 (13-001A) - it includes reprogramming the transmission control module, but centers around a specific error code (P0710).

http://www.the370z.com/370z-technical-service-bulletins-tsb-recalls/75556-2013-z-service-bulletin-13-001a.html

My '13 7AT had an unrelated ECU error code last fall, and I had the dealer apply this TSB while I was there. I haven't experienced any issues with manual mode as you describe, though. Your '14 might have this transmission update installed from the factory, though; probably worth a dealer visit.

. . . and another possibly related question:

On the console, about 1/4 inch forward of the P for park, is some sort of a little round keyhole or receiver for a special tool or something.

1. What is it for?

2. Is it on models previous to 2014 as well?

I can't find it in the owner's manual.

That is for unlocking your car out of park if let's say you need to tow the car and you lost the keys

No need to make 2 threads

Should that key or tool be in the car somewhere I hope???

It sounds like the switches in the shifter are bad or misadjusted. If you want to try to tackle it yourself, download the FSM (link in my sig). Personally, I'd let the dealer handle it under warranty.

Read the owners manual regarding issue #1. The transmission will revert to DRIVE while in manual mode after a short period of time if it is not shifted manually with the handle. This is normal operation.

The " little round keyhole" comes off so the shifter mechanism can be shifted out of gear without a key in the event the car needs to be towed or if the mechanism becomes "jammed". A small screwdrver or similar tool is pushed down through the opening to release the shifter so it can be moved.

All is well.

A tip for the future as well, please don't type in that font style if you want people to read your posts and help you out. I couldn't get myself to read through the whole thing.

Sorry. New member. I wasn't quite sure where the question belonged since it is drivetrain and warranty related.

Which choice would have been better please?

Thanx Datsun,
But it WAS shifted manually with the handle, and the light INSTANTLY jumps back to D the moment you shift, no short period of time involved (the light SHOULD go to the next number the moment you shift).

What you are describing happens just as it is supposed to, when using the PADDLES.

You're correct. I guess I had it backwards. Sorry! Too early in the morning.

never had that happen. that's funny.

As G37Sam has pointed out, you might get more help if your posts were more readable. The small, blue text can be difficult to read, especially on a smaller monitor (or one of less-than-stellar performance). Stick with the default font/color or use something dark and not small.
