HP/Torque NISMO vs. other Z's
I have been doing searches on the web, etc. trying to better understand how Nissan is producing the extra power of the NISMO model. So far I seem to only find statements like this:
"The 370Z NISMO's enhanced engine power and acceleration (versus non-NISMO 370Zs) is provided through use of an exclusive H-configured exhaust system design and muffler tuning, along with optimized ECM (Engine Control Module) calibration." Is the power difference really just the NISMO exhaust and tune? That seems like some very large gains for one bolt-on mod? If a non-Nismo Z added the NISMO exhaust would the ECM relearn to a NISMO like stetting or would the car need to be tuned? Could a dealer do this based on NISMO factory settings without a independent tuner with the same results? Thoughts? I looked forward to learning from all of you on this. Cordially, SterlingDriver |

You should try searching, or just looking through stuff more...
It's exhaust and tune. The exhaust is only worth maybe 7BHP. The rest is the tune. The car will not get you to a Nismo-like tune. The dealer will not apply a Nismo tune. You need an aftermarket tune, which can be fine tuned and you can adjust many more features.

This thread seems to support there is not a lot of difference in the ECM settings with the NISMO, just a little leaner on the top end.
ECU ; stock ECU Vs Nismo ECU difference SterlingDrive |

And there's not a whole lot of difference in the exhaust either. You're talking about 18 hp at the crank, so maybe 12-15 at the wheels. A good aftermarket exhaust and tune and you've picked up far more than 12-15, especially if you do intakes and tps/hfcs at the same time. A stock Nismo dynos at around 290whp or so and bolt ons and a tune will put you around 325whp or so.

Hrm, my joke kinda backfired and became truth lol. Not just a NISMO. A few months ago I saw a touring that stickered for over $43k. Granted, mine is only base, and it was just $32k. How about an IPL G for close to $50k? SMH.

Where's Chii370 to come rushing in to defend how the Nismo is just altogether better in every way than the lowly regular Z? I'm pretty sure he's got a google alert set up when someone disparages God's own chariot.

I thought it was more like the bat-signal. Someone shines it up in the sky, and Nismo owners rush in prepared to do battle.

Yeah most of the parts/power upgrades on the Nismo version aren't worth it compared to aftermarket stuff, but the one thing that might be woth it is the Nismo-style bumper+undertray setup up front. I guess you could retrofit that onto a Sport model, but still.
