stock water and oil temp gauges
Hi guys,
I am thinking of getting a 370z to replace my beloved 350z that I have sold recently. I noticed that 370z's have stock oil temp gauge in the triple gauge, and I see some posts here about installing an aftermarket oil temp gauge. Are they installing aftermarket oil temp gauge because the stock one is not up to scratch or just for the sake of coolness? Also about the water temp 'line' gauge in the dash, does it represent accurate reading over wide range or is it better off getting an aftermarket water temp gauge? Normally on stock gauges the needle pretty much stays solid until the car actually overheats, is this still the same with the water temp 'line' gauge in the 370z or is it something you can trust? ie, 5 dots for 100c 6 dots for 101c etc. It took me some time to have sufficient cooling in my old 350z, and I do track my car a lot. Apparently 370z isn't any better with cooling, so I am definitely going to put on a large oil cooler as soon as I get the car but just wondering whether I should get oil temp gauge as well or just rely on stock gauge. It would be nice if stock gauges can be trusted as I do not really like adding unnecessary gadget to a car.. any input is greatly appreciated! |

Stock oil temp gauge is fine, very accurate.
Stock water temp line gauge is a POS. It will sit in the middle on a wide range of temp and then run up quickly. The reason people replace the oil temp gauge is because they are usually replacing the clock, and the triple gauge cluster in the 370z is a single unit so if you want one gone you need to do all 3 at once.

I agree with theDreamer - oil temperature gauge is pretty good; water temperature gauge is a POS. Water temp would be OK (not good, just OK) if it was a lot closer to linear and/or had some markings showing temp at that point. I don't know how accurate the oil temp is* but haven't seen any reports of it being off.
I have a ScanGuageII on the dash for monitoring water temp. *Edit: The dash gauge agrees very closely with what the car is reporting to the ScanGuageII, but I don't know how close that is to the actual temp.

It's because the entire triple meter is one piece just like the 350Z, so if you want to change one you end up needing to get a couple more gauges. Also, it's a PITA to get to the triple meter compared to the 350Z.

There are multi-gauges with analog and digital displays. Depo has a 4-in-1 stepper motor display with OLED display. I think GReddy has something like it as well.

Thanks for the inputs guys, just as I guessed the stock water temp gauge is pretty much a 'stop right now' gauge like any other conventional stock water temp guages in most cars..
however it is good to know that the stock oil temp gauge is quite accurate, I assumed so as it actually has temp readings on it haha |

Galeforce made the A-pillar pod & I got the custom gauge from Analog and Digital Automotive Gauges - McNally Electronics . They make gauges for aircraft, & started a small auto gauge off shoot. Really happy with Galeforce's work & McNally's work. Gauge has automatic lighting & is white during the day time which matches the Tach & Speedo during the day & then matches the rest of the lighting at night. Here is another pic

Did you make the prosport backplate yourself? I love the way that center console looks (although you could use more of the real estate there). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeah. Some copper plate I had laying around from making gaskets. Nice because its thick as hell so its strong but soft enough to bend and shape to match the contour of the dash and radio.
Yeah one more gauge and I'm sure a switch for something. Maybe a F1 blinking rear fog light or NO2.

Awesome! How did you take the lid/door cover off? Did you have to cut off the handles? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
