Short throw shifter rattle
I installed a B&M short thro shifter about a month ago and it started rattling under hard accelerating, Around 6500 rpms it sounds like somethings loose and rattles loud. Ive taken it all apart and retorqued the bolts and everything but nothing was loose! Anyone having this problem?

Yes, mine has a rattle around 5k, I have tried a few different things to help "soften" the rattle or absorb it but nothing. If you can find the source then that will help know how to fix it.

I had the stock one, it rattled, had two cheap shift knobs (they rattled), had a greddy shift knob (never drove fast enough to test), now I have a TWM shift knob and it rattles.

I went through this on my Vette with an aftermarket shifter...It's not the knob. The problem is that the driveline vibrates. The Z is not a lot different from the Vette in this regard. A stock shifter has enough slop and damping rubber built into it to mask the transmitted vibration and noise, making it generally acceptable. When you tighten the tolerances in the shifter and remove the OEM damping built into the shaft and various bearing pivots, you get vibration in the shifter and mechanism. This translates into a rattle in the shifter assembly. Not much you can do.... Last edited by Modshack; 08-28-2009 at 05:24 PM. |

Sounds good, might do that when I do my exhaust install in a few months.

You might look into the 350z short throw shifters and ask some of those companies if they are going to create a 370z shifter. If so, it might be worth jumping ship then to get rid of that rattle.

Hmmmm......this is timely, and somewhat disappointing.
Did you call the manufacturer? If so, what did they say? And I was about ready to buy the unit. I am subscribing. |

I know mine isnt a b&m shifter, but a clone...
I believe I know where the rattle is coming from... look at the 6th picture and on... You see where the two shafts mate up and there is a hex bolt and locknut connecting the upper and lower shaft together... This is where I felt obvious movement, I tightened the locknut 5 turns and it still has play, enough so that when I move it back and forth I can here it hitting metal... So at high rpm's I could see the rattle coming from this area, just my observation, I dont have it installed yet... USPS delivered a few goodies today! - Short Trow Shifter & Magnetic Drain Plug

I just got my shifter in from Z1 Motorsports:
AMS Adjustable Short Throw Shifter available @ Z1 Motorsports I plan on getting it installed within the next 2 weeks. Since I'm re-using all the stock components, there should be no difference in "rattle" or vibration as the OEM one. I'll post some pics and impressions later. |
