- I have an audio system. I understand you have the alternator pulley, but I just wonder what sort of effect it'll have in terms of lifetime of the alternator (i.e., does it end up working harder or just running up to spec)?

Improving throttle response is a definite plus!

Thanks!

Installation only requires about 1 to 1.5hrs at any professional mechanic shop and is very easy with the proper tools. No adjustments of any kind are necessary... even the OEM belt can be reused.

And to answer your question regarding the alternator, I will quote what I posted on page three of this thread...

The NST Underdrive Crank Pulley is a 10% underdrive (slow down) pulley, and as you can see in the pic here, it is very close to the OEM pulley in size. This pulley is designed to slow the accessories by roughly 10%... not enough to "kill" any of the accessories, but just enough to free up a nice amount of hp and tq to send to the wheels. The excellent weight reduction also aids in providing better throttle response, quick acceleration, and better fuel economy. We did a bit of testing and decided that 10% is the sweet spot for this application. 20% or 30% underdrive may provide an extra 1/2 or 1 hp or tq at the wheels... but it may do so at the expense of some of the other accessories' functions, so we decided to stick to 10% for our pulley.

The NST Overdrive Alternator Pulley is a 10% overdrive (speed up) pulley, and as you can see in this pic, it is also very similar in size, to the OEM pulley. This pulley is designed to bring the alternator back to OEM speeds. No slower, no faster. There will be NO hp or tq loss when using this pulley. The crank pulley is the SENDER pulley and it is the pulley that decides how much power the accessories will receive. The size of each accessory pulley determines how this power is used. The alternator will not be overworked, underworked, robbed, killed, etc. when the NST pulley is used. It will work in the same efficiency range as it would with the OEM Nissan pulley.

NST Pulleys are NOT a "one size fits all" type of design. We take the needs of each application into consideration, we come up with a few prototypes/configurations, and ultimately we sell the KIT that works best based on the data we collect.

Both pulleys are compatible with the OEM belt and the OEM belt has shown to work very well during the past several months of testing. As long as you are using a new belt, or your current belt is in good condition, you should be good to go!

There are other options out there, and some of them are excellent options. We feel that NST offers the best all around kit, with the best all around options, at the best possible prices. Our customers feedback and reviews have consistently proved these to be the truth.

Thanks again everyone, good luck and have fun with all your projects!

Many thanks for your interest and the reply. Good luck and have fun with all your projects!

NST,

Just a quick, stupid question as mine should be here tomorrow. I assume they have timing marks on them. I see them on the Stillen unit but not on yours. Thanks.

NST hoping to see these results soon.
the earlier ppl do see these the faster these will sell imho

NST. i want to apologize for making your thread a big bash-fest. I hope this could some how help your sales tho!
Semtex--really appreciate you trying to stick up for me.
to those that want to bash let me clarify a couple of things. I had the R8 for a month (a little less). I have a friend (my father's friend) that owns an exotic car dealership and he is who I got it from and gave it back because I realized that I was not in the financial position at the time to get the car (economy was going down)...no harm done. he was cool with it. when I say I, i mean my brother as well. He was shopping for cars and its what we decided. Since he and I are in the process of getting the clothing line up and it is he and i that play polo and work with horses, we wanted a cool car--r8 was the choice at that time. then after i got the new Z, times got better and I was obsessed with GTR. that's why we got it. im not trying to brag. i dont like ppl that do show off. I havent been on my350 for a while, for the simple reason that i, being a student/young will get flamed for nothing. and i know this will probably get posted there, but whatever. I am going to enjoy this site, and the cars I drive. simple. Bash me all you want, its not gonna make you "cooler" or more respectable here. post a DIY like modshack, or take pics of installs like Semtex, show racebuilds/vidoes like Travis and RCZ...then you'll get the respect of others. anyway, i apologize again to NST. I hope this will all stop

YES! All NST pulleys have the proper timing marks on them.

You will see them when your package arrives, and you can see them in some of our pics if you look closely!!!

Don't forget to post a review for us after you get your pulleys installed :driving:

Thanks! I just wanted to double check about the alternators. [Adds another toy to wish list]

Other than anodized red and gray as mentioned - is there a reason they aren't offered in polished aluminum (maybe clear-coated to keep them looking great, just not on the belt area), or, black?

Also, 'nother basic question - where's the harmonic balancer with the VQ37VHR?

Thanks!

The Red and Graphite Gray are the HARDEST choices, and we build them in these colors in order to provide the best, most durable, longest lasting options to our customers.

Those who want the "tuner" look generally go with the red, and those who want the "stealth" look usually go with the gray. We have never offered bare aluminum pulleys and have no plans for any black kits at this time.

Thanks again for your interest and the reply, good luck and have fun with all your projects!

Had both the 10% crank underdrive pulley and 10% overdrive alternator pulley installed today. They thought it would take an hour but it took just about two. They ended up removing the alternator to change the pulley. Car definitely responds quicker and have noticed no difference in the power steering, noise or vibration. NST recommends using the same belt when making both modifications, however, the marks on the auto-tensioner no longer line up where they are supposed to (page EM-13 in the SM) - about 1/2 inch off. Will this be a problem and does anyone know the number of a belt that is slightly smaller? Thanks.

Wow, you got yours installed quickly! Glad to hear that you have noticed a difference in your throttle response and acceleration. This is definitely a mod that helps in that department.

It is true that the auto tensioner will not sit in the same location as before, but this is not going to be a problem. Our local test car has been running these pulleys for about six months now, on the OEM belt, with no issues.

Thanks again for the quick post and the positive feedback. Good luck and have fun with all your future projects!

got mine in yesterday and installed myself at the shop (im a mechanic) the center on the balancer needs to ne roughly 1 to 2mm larger the other problem i ran into is the factory belt will work butt... i wouldnt use it because it is too loose the biggest problem is getting a belt that works... factory is a k070810 gates belt... you NEED a 790 but they and when i mean they i mean every belt manufacture worth a damn doesnt make a 790 in a 7 rib belt... i drove home last night with a 790 k6 on :-/ ordered a 786k7 and just got it delivered ten mins ago i will let everyone know if it works...
ps. since the new balancer is smaller than factory i tried installing it by itself and the factory belt was too loose for my liking. with the alt pulley installed it was really too short i could slide the belt off the idle pulleys w/o even touching the tensioner not to mention it was completely retracted not placing any tension on the belt
also you do need to partially remove the alt and tilt it downwards to be able to hit i

jpit 09-01-2009 11:59 AM

Moemeister,

Did you install the alternator pulley, also? Looking at the marks on the auto tensioner, I think I need a belt 1/2" shorter. Would you have a Gates number for that? Thanks.
