Oil temp ?
Did a few pulls for the first time in this Z.
First off, 60-70mph rolls against a 11' 7AT. (closed and private road). That thing shifts quick. Anyway, I noticed that my oil temp under normal driving takes an incredible amount of time to get to normal operating temp (I figure about 210-220ish according to my gauge). It was around 200 when I made my first run, and by the second un I noticed I was hitting 240 on the gauge. After seeing that I let off and ended it. I also seemed to notice a bit of a burnt oil smell. Popped the hood when I stopped and didn't see anything, no drips on the ground either. (smell was prop my imagination) Question, this seems a bit high IMO, is it??? I did see that the first answer to "what I should look out for/do to my 09'" was an oil cooler. Thanks guys, going from 350 to 370 doesn't seem like a big deal, but I want to make sure the car is well why I learn this new platform. Mike |

Oil cooler is a requirement for any spirited driving, especially with warmer ambient temps. There are several sponsors here that sell cooler kits, or you can look at the DIY to source your own parts and make an oil cooler kit for half the price.

220 shouldn't be your gauge for a 'normal operating temp'. look for 180. that's considered the go to redline temp
09 manuals have oil consumption issues. make sure you aren't burning any. oil cooler would be a good first mod too.

Alright gents. Thanks for the quick responses. I also don't know what type of oil is in the thing.
I had a sentra with oil consumption issues, seems like Nissan cant figure that one out. Ill start checking it out. |

Just checked my oil, and yeah I would say Im burning. I checked it cold at the dealership before buying, the dip stick read roughly a 1/8" from the H line. This morning Its reading only about 1/4" over L line.
Going to Nissan today to pull a history of the car. Also, should be grabbing a Z1 cooler as sson as I get a reply. MIke |

You probably know this, but I'm just throwing it out there for anyone else who might not.
If you are parked even slightly uphill, your dipstick will read lower than the true level. Conversely, parking facing slightly downhill will result in a higher than true reading. So measuring oil level on the flat dealership lot, then on your driveway/garage will most likely give the wrong impression. For example: my garage floor at home is slightly angled for drainage but you would never be able to tell just looking at it. It affects the dipstick substantially. This hadn't occurred to one of my family members. They thought they were burning oil when they really had only burned about 1/4 quart in 4000 miles.

Yeah good heads up, but Im very much on level ground. That all we have around here!
I have put about 1500miles on it since I bought it. Im going to do an oil change tomorrow so I can start to track the burn I didn't get to Nissan today as its sunday (thought it was sat) |

good call on the z1 kit. if you can get your engine replaced, i'd attempt that before adding an oil cooler.

Yeah the engine replacement may be tricky. Its out of the factory warranty, but I did buy a 5yr/60000mile warranty which started the day I bought it. Ill bring it to Nissan, get the history and then go from there.
I mainly wanted to change the oil so I can be sure of what's in it. Who knows what kinf of oil the dealership put in it. |

My car had a replacement block before I bought it and even now it burns around a qt every 3k maybe a tad less, but I red line the car a lot. Most higer revving cars the Z included will slip oil past the rings at high rpms, with my red line upped a few hundred RPMS you can smell the oil no doubt, the question is if it is excessive. I take it the factory 5/60 is expired? Because good luck getting an after market warranty to pay for oil consumption, because they wont, they will make you authorize the engine tear down, and if there is no part FAILURE(ring issues at the least the ones I have called in are not considered a failure I have yet to get any after market company to fix an OC car...) you are getting stiffed for the tear down. Honda of America considers 1 qt evet 3k miles acceptable, and the SI they are even less stringent on, oil consumption tests on an SI is always the same answer...

Ya that's your best if it is that's your avenue if it is... I'm sure your aware of three bulletin on the 09-10s? Its not just nissan, we have PLENTY of OC issues with certain Hondas.

no way it substantially changes your dipstick reading. the garage floor has maybe a 1 degree slope. |
