Shifting 1st and 2nd jerking and strange sound

Hey guys, I drive a 2014 370z with automatic transmission and am curious about these issues I'm having. I am rather new to driving stick(this is my first manual transmission vehicle) but I've had it for about 4 weeks already and have put about 2k miles on it so far. The issues I'm having usually happen in shifting from first to second and second to third... I try to shift at about 3000-4500rpms and when I do it's not the smoothest shift and it sounds like a rock is being thrown in my engine or something (weird clanking). If i shift at 5k + it's usually fine.. But I try not to in my usually driving routine. Even when I let off the clutch smooth and slow once it passes the friction point it makes that sound and jerks a bit.

If you're driving a manual, pull the helper spring out of the clutch and just give it time. You'll get it. It's a clunky transmission. If you're driving an automatic, it's broken because there's a clutch pedal in it.

Ok, makes more sense. The tranny makes noise. It's fine. You'll get the feel for it soon enough. It's just a little clunky.

that's drivetrain noise probably. you need to give it a touch of throttle when you gently engage the next gear during an upshift.

like tossing a water balloon up in the air and catching it while you raise your hands and match speed with the balloon to catch it without it breaking. you need to give the flywheel some momentum. otherwise your flywheel is too slow when your clutch catches the next gear. then you hear that clank.

Makes sense.. But from what I've read I thought you need to veer away from the throttle while on the clutch as much as possible due to avoidable wear and tear.

You want the engine to be at the correct speed for the next gear before you let off the clutch. It's a balancing act, and it just takes practice.

Go search for the threads on the "clutch helper spring" here. If you take it out, you'll get a better feel what the clutch is doing. It takes twenty minutes.

Thanks! Will definitely look into it. Quick question... How do you know what the correct speed is? And how do you control it all? Like.. What controls what? Sorry.. Like I said I'm new. I know somewhat how things work but am still learning.

that's if you're slipping.

im not saying to slip the clutch into 2nd. im saying to give slight throttle so that you give the flywheel some momentum while it is spinning down...if you give too much throttle and your flywheel spins up while your engaging, then you're slipping. you dont want that.

Basically, your leg needs to learn at which point the clutch engages. The speed of the car is irrelevant, you need to look at the engine speed (rpm's on the tach). Keep it under red line and you'll be fine. Normal shifts should be between 3500 and 4500 rpm's depending on how you want to drive. Obviously you can shift to 7000rpms if you're driving crazy aggressive. The 1st to 2nd shift is always tricky. That's where muscle memory comes in. After some practice, you'll know where the clutch engages. You can ease the clutch in without damaging the clutch. You don't have to let it drop quickly at each shift...if that makes any sense.
