Its sounds just like a lifter going bad 'tick' a 'tick' a 'tick' a 'tick', injectors have a quicker 't' 't' 't' 't' sound. Before I took it to the dealer I went to youtube and checked out a bunch of other (Maxima's, G35's, and 350z's) that had lifter or rod knock to get an idea of what the sound was. It definitely sounded more like a tick then a knock. So it did not sound like a throw rod. But when in 2 weeks of the first sign of the tick the noise started to get louder and making noise all the time at idle and 1800-3500 rpm.

Did they say what is wrong with the engine? How bad was the 'tick'?
It will be taken care of under warranty, which is great considering the cost of repairs. After the dealer drove my Z around a lot and listened to the noise they said without a doubt is coming for the bottom of the engine (Short Block). They discovered this by having it on the lift and reving to 1800rpm where the tick was very loud and easy to discover in the shop. If you are modded keep all your stock parts and return to stock if you have issues. They did not care about the after market exhaust at all, that surprised me and of course made me very happy knowing I can just keep it on there. They wanted all my oil history which is not a problem since I am one of those suckers that got every oil change at the dealer ever 3-4k miles.

Did you replace all of your mods with stock before you brought it in?

I got my Z back from the Dealer with the new Short Block. $6300.00 for parts/repairs good thing its under warranty. First off my car sounds so much better. Has a nice deep growl to it and the tick is gone. Now I have to go through the 1200 mile break in again and keep my eyes on the oil. I know it will consume a little oil during break in but should not consume any after 5000 miles or 2nd oil change. I will post back once I have a few thousand miles on it. Got to say I really missed my 370z makes me appreciate it even more now that I am driving it again. And like I said it sounds so much better big howling growl at 3500rpm, music to my ears!

UPDATE:
I have 730 miles on the new Short Block so far so good. I have been checking my oil and it hasn't consumed any oil, still at the top of the dip stick. The oil color looks good too. With the old (Faulty) Short Block my (Ester) oil would turn dark very quick that is no longer happening.

I can't wait to get this sucker to 1200 miles so I can change the oil and rip into it again. I miss hitting 7500rpms, puts a smile on my face!

That is why your oil isn't turning black very fast. More rpm's the faster it will turn black. 5k miles and my woman's oil still looks new cause she doesn't go over 4k rpm's. My oil is black after 1500 cause I am at redline daily.

Exact opposite happened to me. 800 miles deep on the new short block and the oil level is halfway down between the h and l. Gonna wait til 1000 miles and bring it back in.

That means your consumption is due to a head related problem. Bring it back and get a full long block.

I have just noticed my 1st signs of OC at 19k. I use Motul 300v 5W-40 due to how hot the oil temps get when you drive it hard and I was just below the L mark on the dipstick at oil change today. Taking her back in 1k to begin OC testing. Here we go again, went thru this with my 03 G35, but not until around 60k.
