Moroso Oil Pans
Just wanted to announce that I've emailed Moroso (a company known for making large capacity oil pans), regarding whether one would be made available for the 370Z. I'll keep you guys posted when they respond and will follow up with a phone call to them if they don't get back to me in a couple days.
I think this would be a good solution for those of us with moderately high oil temps but do not track the car enough to benefit from spending almost $1,000 on a cooler. I'm aware that a pan spacer is available but from the install pics, it appears there is a piece of metal in the way which requires some cutting / shaving. Anyone interested? I'm surprised Moroso hasn't considered the Z. I think a lot of people in both the 370Z and G37 community would benefit from this. |

All you have to do is send Moroso an oil pan and they'll get one made. If you need help with the process, feel free to get a hold of me and I can help with getting it made.

It would seem that more oil in circulation would lead to decreased temps. So I wonder how much additional oil will be needed to produce a significant temperature benefit.

Dan- do I need to take mine off and ship it to them? I need the car on a daily basis.
NeedforZ- regarding your above post, I don't think a higher oil cap would lower the temp. More oil would take longer to reach a high temp however. The way I see it, its like boiling water. A small pot will boil quickly and a large one will take longer to boil just due to volume. I don't think it has as much to do with more oil circulation. The oil lines are still the same size and will be pumping the same amount through the engine given that the stock oil pump is being used. |
On this oil pan issue. I have seen in the past, oil pans that are deeper than stock(more oil) but they also had fins on the bottom, or tubes that flowed air thru them, this design would keep the oil cooler without the expense of the oil cooler, not as good as a cooler but better than stock.

Greater oil capacity
Often means cooler temps. When Porsche used air cooled engines before 1998, they used more oil capacity to aid cooling. P cars will run 8-10 qts. of oil even in their water cooled engines of today. I think more capacity would aid in the oil temp issue but not sure how much. Perhaps some folks who know more could chime in. Perhaps Modshack has some ideas or some of the builders who follow this site....

Getting the oil away from the heat source was a big factor. Often air cooled motors are referred to as Air/oil cooled, as oil and air both take heat away from the internals. Engines that rely more on oil cooling typically have a higher capacity. Adding a pan (or a spacer will add about a quart. My oil cooler adds a quart, so you could get up to 7 qts here with both. I don't think adding capacity can hurt but ultimately a cooler is the best solution as you add BOTH capacity AND a heat exchanger. Adding capacity alone is probably not an effective cure when the heated oil is just going to puddle in the relatively unventilated sump before being recirculated. (though I have vented mine in addition to the cooler).. |

Why not just an oil pan spacer? Its cheap and effective. I had one on my 350Z, but since I just ordered all the parts for Modshack's oil cooler setup and that adds a quart, I will probably pass on it for now. |

I don't think the ARC Cool Fin would be very effective esp with the engine cover covering the airflow. Even without it, there is very little heat dissapation coming from the bottom of an oil pan. I've also read that those don't work. |
