Engine making clapping sound, is this normal?

Hopefully people can hear the clapping sound in the background. My baby behaves like this when oil temp goes above 200F. Wondering if this is normal? Please help. Thank you.

Try popping the hood and making another recording. I don't hear anything abnormal but I don't hear much of anything in your vid. :(

theres metal clapping sound in the background. it is kinda not as loud as other sounds

1slow370 09-11-2013 08:44 PM

do you have a different cluth or flywheel? it almost sounds like that

SouthArk370Z 09-11-2013 08:57 PM

Stick your head under the car, pop the hood, &c and see if you can narrow down where the noise is coming from. A paper towel core or similar held to the ear can help narrow it down even further. Be careful around a running engine - there are moving parts that will hurt you.

Nop. everything is stock

DIGItonium 09-12-2013 12:26 AM

Depress the clutch pedal. Does the noise go away?

DEpointfive0 09-12-2013 12:33 AM

Is he hearing the valves?

1slow370 09-12-2013 12:27 PM

doesn't sound like the valves I second the does it go away if you push the clutch test

Chuck33079 09-12-2013 12:28 PM

It's either the clutch or the valvetrain/injectors/VVEL. The top end of this motor is noisy.

street2soul 09-12-2013 12:30 PM

i can only make out the flywheel/clutch chatter, but you said its at certain temperature so.. I could be wrong

Burns should be the least of your problems, unless you get in a big hurry. You won't be grabbing and shaking things like you would when looking for a rattle. The parts that are really hot are putting off enough IR that you will feel the heat before you get too close. Clothing, jewelry, fingers, elbows, &c can easily get snatched by moving parts before you can blink an eye.

I don't recall if the noise went away by depress clutch but definitely gone when i step on the gas.

That's what I meant, my bad

DIGItonium 09-12-2013 02:19 PM

I only viewed the video on my phone, so I couldn't pick anything out of the ordinary. Rev it a tiny bit and observe the noise. Next morning, check the oil dipstick to make sure oil level is between L and H as a sanity check. When did you have your oil change? What kind and/or brand was used? Regardless, the last thing you want to hear is rod knock. Hearing that sound from YouTube vids gives me goose bumps.

With us turbo/sc folks, we've got loud injectors and possibly more noise from VVEL. As long as it's not rod knock or broken VVEL actuator, we just continue driving as usual.

Fixed.

I think its ur half shafts, the O rings or spacers on the half shaft broke in, not broken and it has a lil play back n forth on start up toque so u wanna fix it? this is what u do:

1)get a 32mm long socket with 1/2 in torque wrench or above
2) remove wheel and then remove a metal pin that acts like a stopper for the 32mm.
3) tighten the 32mm nut to 177lb of torque
4) put all back together, test should be no clicking noise.

Chuck33079 09-12-2013 02:44 PM

It's pretty hard to confuse the axle click with clutch/engine noise.

My mileage at 1700 and I changed my oil at 1200. I will check oil level when i go back but I don't think that will reveal a problem.

Go find out if the noise stops when you push the clutch in first. Its probably normal.

anthony909 09-12-2013 04:36 PM

My car makes the same noise, it goes away when you press down on the clutch

anthony909 09-12-2013 04:36 PM

It was like that ever since I bought the car so I assumed it to be normal

Chuck33079 09-12-2013 04:37 PM

It is.

You could just take it to the dealer but, if you know what is wrong before you go in, you can tell if they are blowing smoke up your a$$ (some like to do that). The Q&D check for clutch noise takes about five seconds and pinpointing engine noise shouldn't take more than five minutes.

I lived near Joliet during the '70s. Waaaayyyyy too cold for this Southern Boy.

So since my GF was here over the weekend, I was able to driver my baby for a while. I did notice the noise goes away when I step on the clutch. So it is normal then? it does sound less "sporty" :(

It's normal. Get used to it.

1slow370 09-17-2013 01:04 PM

clutch noise doesn't make a car sound "less sporty" it makes it sound "less DD", aluminum bushes, spherical rod ends, stiff shocks, removing noise insulation, poly engine mounts, all these add up to REALLY loud car that sounds broken but goes like hell.
