Default Dip stick reading

Anyone know why the oil towards the top of the dipstick is lighter in color than towards the bottom? On the top it gets so clear to the point where I can no longer actually see the oil, but can just make out the line where the oil level stops. Is this line the accurate oil reading, or should I base the oil level off where I can noticeably see the oil color still?

Not sure if serious. The oil has **** in it which settles downwards. You measure the top where the oil stops. Wipe off the dipstick before checking..

Oil has what in it? It's normal to have the bottom part of the dipstick be darker than towards the top part?

This would be gravity my friend. The oil at the top is draining down so its thinner and thus lighter.

I think what you are seeing is gravity at work and the oil film near the bottom of the stick is thicker. Try holding the stick level for a few seconds and see if things don't even out. If not, you may have a problem.

Well that does make sense. So considering the oil is basically brand new, its normal for the oil on the very top of the dip stick to be basically invisible, determining the level by a faint oil line seen by the "H" mark?

It depends what kind of oil you use. So what kind are you using?

I think you need to let the oil in your car mix more, go drive it, THEN come check it.

Looks to me like the stick is dragging on the tube (or something else) and picking up some oil on that side. Wipe the stick clean, stab it again, go by the lowest reading.
