Oil change

I have 2010 370z touring sport pk. I have receive about 7-10 oil changes from the nissan dealership since i bought the car in 8/22/2010. When i check the oil after the oil changes the oil is always at the H mark....everytime . This year i drove to fl.(800 miles) and notice the oil had drop a little to the top hole on the dip stick. since the oil was always at the H mark i added under 1/4 qts of oil to get it back to the H mark. CAR HAD COOL DOWN FOR HOURS, before i check the dip stick each time. I have never own a car that had any consumption problems so i took it back to the dealership. I get my ticket back and the maintance man wrote a comment, " oil a little high".I will take the car back in 8/8/13(next oil change)to see where the dip stick is at and question why do you put oil in to the H mark then? DUMMY ALERT; I always thought the H mark was were the oil was suppose to be; not for, your oil is at the HIGH mark.

H stands for "Higher than this, your engine go BOOM".

Nissan engine specifications allow up to 1qt per 1000miles of oil consumption. If you're getting the free oil changes from the dealership they're using conventional oil instead of synthetics. Start using BMW performance 5w30. It's cheaper than our ester and rated higher than Mobil 1.

ester oil

i usedwhat was reccomented; ester. what about mobil one syn?

Like I said the BMW oil is a higher quality. Rated in there cars for 1year 15k mile oil changes. It's around $7 a qt here. Compared to the Mobil 1 at 9.84 a qt. did you pay the difference on the oil changes or were they free? - Never mind I reread your original post and see I misunderstood what you said, you have had 7-10 oil changes performed at the dealer, I thought they were complimentary. Anyway, there is a TSB for oil consumption on early Z's. Send me your VIN and I will check it Monday.

first off this is wrong. you let the car cool for 15 minutes then check while on a level surface.

sounds to me like you DONT have an oil consumption issue.

If it's at the high mark cold, it's over it when the oil warms up. Too much oil is not a good thing.

Anywhere between the low and high marks is usually ok, although you shold be closer to the H than the L.

I have a question to this? @chuck since you live here in Tx your more familiat with our type of weather, anyways I use 10w30 Royal Purple synthetic, is that fine or am I forcefully supposed to use 5w30??? (FYI I've had my Z since 2010 and its at about 64k miles)

Chuck33079 07-22-2013 02:13 PM

Really doesn't make too much of a difference. It's a little thicker cold, but they both end up at a 30wt warm. Next oil change send a little bit off to Blackstone Labs, get an oil analysis and ask them.

megalapagas 07-22-2013 02:32 PM

Alrighty then thx!

I use Castrol full synthetic 5w-30. But this could be a never ending debate. Just send the oil to get tested. If it comes back good then stick with it

370zrider 07-22-2013 04:44 PM

My friend uses oilve oil in her car.

9GAG - Honey the car needs oil

370zrider 07-22-2013 04:45 PM

I use Mobil1 in mine. The same used in the GTR.

What's the right oil for my car?

sstroudwku 07-22-2013 08:46 PM

The oil debate could go on for days. I suggested the BMW full synthetic due to it's price for performance. It's been tested to a higher standard than off the shelf M1 and Castrol. It is a good bit cheaper as well. I've purchased enough from the local dealer they have me in a permanent discount at 6.44/qt. RP around here is nearly 13/qt, Castrol and M1 are almost 10/qt. Before my Z I drove BMW's, still service them quite a bit. After tearing into several that have used higher quality oils and lower quality oils I realized the value of a higher quality oil. Digging sludge out of engines that used Penz, Havoline, GTX with paperwork to back regular services made me start thinking. The worst was an Xterra, 46k miles with service records that took it back to 2000miles. Never over 3500miles between services and used Valvoline exclusively. Took me 2 hours to clean the sludge off the timing covers. You couldn't see the upper chain guide or chain from the build up. Anyway, choose a good quality oil if you plan on keeping the car. I like my choice, but, I put 150miles a day on my car. It's my DD and I commute 75miles each way. I go 5000miles between oil changes and I use a 9E instead of a 65F, it's slightly bigger. I put 5.25qts in, puts the mark about 1/4" below the high mark. At the end of 5k it's about 1/2" below the high mark.
