Need help. Transmission issue? Code U0101
1 Attachment(s)
Gentlemen,
I'm having a very weird issue with my Z. The transmission seems to have a problem. As you can see in the pics, I have a Service Engine light, a Golden Key to the left, and the Transmission gear numbers are out. When I drove the vehicle around my street, the Tiptronic does not work and the car doesnt shift well, its feels dangerous driving. I used a Scanner and got a U0101 code. God I hope my tranny didnt go bad :( |

Heres the pic of the scanner

TCM is out, it's the brain of the transmission, no HUGE deal, but I'd not drive it
|
Wow, thanks for the fast reply :)
Im happy as long as the transmission doesnt need to be replaced. Is this something expensive to replace? Can any mechanic replace this or is this a Nissan only type of thing? |
Damn. That was quick. Nevermind. lol
TCM isn't exactly easy to replace, at least not to my knowledge. My last car the transmission had to be dropped to do it. The TCM was nearly $900 to replace. And personally, I would have Nissan do it. Just my opinion. |
Its an Automatic Transmission with 35,000 miles.
Im pretty gentle with her, lol. Car doesn't shift until I hit a high RPM. It jerks pretty badly I do have a Stillen Exhaust and a Stillen Intake if that makes a difference |

WOW. I hope thats covered under the Powertrain Warranty |
U0101 - Lost Communication With Transmission Control Module
Possible causes - Faulty Transmission Control Module (TCM) - TCM harness is open or shorted - TCM circuit poor electrical connection Help with this Symptoms - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light) U0101 Description Modules connected to the high speed General Motor Local Area Network (GMLAN) serial data circuits monitor for serial data communications during normal vehicle operation. Operating information and commands are exchanged among the modules. The modules have prerecorded information about what messages are needed to be exchanged on the serial data circuits, for each virtual network. The messages are supervised and also, some periodic messages are used by the receiver module as an availability indication of the transmitter module. The supervision time-out period is 250 ms. Each message contains the identification number of the transmitter module. |

On my luck they'll blame that as the cause |

Honestly, you can ask if they document mods, and if they care. But TCM doesn't and can't have a damn thing to do with intake or exhaust or more HP or ANYTHING even close where they could TRY to make a case |

Was any electrical work or any other work done prior to the failure. Modules like this rarely fail.

Wow. They said a rat chewed the transmission wiring harness. About 2K including labor to fix. I dont know what to say
|
It happens allot.

Damn!!!! So the harness is 900
|
Also rabbits. But rats and mice are a common problem especially if you park outside and the car isn't daily driven.

The main wiring harness is $1,486.48 online (discounted).
I'm guessing it's the 24011-Z34002 EGI harness which online is $629.00. I wouldn't want to try and replace it though, pretty nightmarish. |

I'm not touching it. Gonna have someone other than Nissan to install it. They charge $1000 just for labor |

Like I said the price is only a guess based on your vehicle and suspected damaged area. You should get the exact part # of the piece that is damaged so you can be sure you are getting the correct piece. |
Dammit... Sorry brother

Saw the same thing on my dash on the way back from LA today. Check engine and key light.
Car would rev super slow at first, then...the gear light went off and shifting manually was impossible. Shutting down the car, waiting for a few minutes and turning back on would allow the car to be shifted manually and would rev normally for a short time, eventually the car would go back to this lame *** limp mode. When I got home I hooked up my OBD scanner, and got P0500 and U0101. Did ECU reset, and the car was fine, for a while. Check engine light hasn't returned, but the slow revving symptoms returned. I imagine tomorrow morning it'll go away, again. Heat seems to exacerbate it, like today...it was really flippin' hot and I put a lot of miles on the car I'm thinking this is related to the dealer installing a new transmission on my car recently, maybe they didn't properly reprogram the TCM. I guess I'll find out tomorrow |
Update: after clearing the codes using the the ECU reset procedure, the codes have not returned. Although it may come back on another hot day in the canyons or the track
|
Update: I did a long drive up the 15 freeway and made it as far as Victorville, same crap as before. CEL came on and i drove it to the Victorville Nissan dealership. They kept the car over the weekend, they called Nissan HQ on Monday and HQ had them loosen and retighten a bunch of ground wires that I suppose are attached to the TCM. Nissan did a 60 mile test drive and the issue never returned.
I drove it back to Corona and then to South OC and never saw the problem again. The car seems to be running fine now. Just to reiterate this was related to Code U0101 |
Update: It came back, thought i was good to go on my way to ZCON in San Diego on Saturday. Big fat nope. The problem came back and eventually so did the U0101 code. Drove home and then to the dealership same day.
Got the car back yesterday, dealership says the battery needed to be replaced because the current it was ouputting was insufficient for the TCM and other devices to function properly. They said the battery was ouputting something like 150A when it should have been doing 580A. So i had them replace the thing and I picked it up yesterday. I'm not convinced it's gone till i take it on a long drive. I guess we'll see. |
