P0820 Gear Lever X-Y Position Sensor Circuit
so when driving my Z hard and downshifting my car will slip into neutral, engine will shut off, all warning lights come on and car will not start. when trying to restart i can here it trying to catch but to no luck. after a couple hours of rest I am able to turn my car on. I checked my ecu and got a code of P0820 Gear Lever X-Y Position Sensor Circuit. Has anyone else on the forum have this problem and if so what is the fix?

Is your car stock (in terms of everything under the car that is)?

Take it to the dealership. If the sensor failed, they'll replace it. Wait for the code to come back if you cleared it.
Other than that, you could try checking through the shop manual (its on here somewhere in a zipped file). Can't find much about it after a google search.

supposedly it's my tune that's causing those codes. apparently my tune was created for the sport model with the srm and mine is the base model without it. they're searching the data base to see whether my ecu has ever been replaced. I don't believe that cause my car was turning off before I tuned it so it's a guessing game. So far they replaced the short block cause they said it was due to the engine oil consumption, then they replaced my ecu wires cause they said that was the problem.

What? They replaced your engine due to oil consumption? And you were getting sensor faults that led them to check your oil? Dude, you need to fill in the major information gaps here.

first time car died they said it's due to oil consumption- short block replaced. second time it died they said it's due to my ecu wires being pinched to the frame due to work being done to my car, ecu sending several fault codes- ecu wires replaced. third time it died received error code P0820 Gear Lever X-Y Position Sensor Circuit. now i'm waiting for results.

Hmm. I don't know how or if SRM logic is involved in this, but the fact they've had much of the car dissembled makes me wonder if in the course of all of this work, a sensor was damaged or something...
I'm not sure who tuned your car, but if the ROM file doesn't match the ECU, it simply won't work -- in fact, it can brick or lock up the ECU. Meaning, if the tune matches the ECU and the ECU matches the car, all should be good. I don't think you can do any mixing and matching. Now "pinched" ECU wires causing weird glitches -- of that I don't know. That's weird. I've never heard of that before. Unless they was damage in the wiring causing connection problems or something. Either way, it boils down to that fault code points to a specific sensor malfunction, so that is where they should begin trouble shooting. If in the course of doing that they find a damaged ECU wire, okay, fair enough, but the good news is all of this should be easily deducible and fixable (albeit very annoying!). Good luck!

Hey there,
I know its been a while since you posted your issue here! Would you be able to help me with the issue? I got the same issue with the "service engine soon light on" as well as the blinkin "N" in the gear position LED screen infront of you. I scanned it and got p0820 which I assume the one you got. The only difference here is that my Z is Automatic version. Would you be able to help me here? any pictures of that sensor? can i get the part number? do you know where is it located? anything that would help is much appreciated |

The sensor is mounted at the bottom of the shift lever. The FSM will have drawings, wiring diagrams, Nissan's name for the part, &c. If the FSM doesn't have a part number, Nissan Parts, NISMO and Nissan Accessories - Courtesyparts.com has a decent search.
