[QUOTE=XwChriswX;2262342] I think this mindset works for 70's-80's even 90's era MT vs ATs, but with modern ATs, I don't think there is as much of a gap between them anymore.

That is for sure...I have driven older automatic muscle cars...You cannot road race them...When you downshift, there is a hesitation and then rear wheels lock up..

I would never own an older automatic Muscle car unless it was ONLY for the Quarter Mile...

But I do have the Auto 370 mainly for the Wife, but I am loving it ...Would I love the Manual more ? Maybe, but the modern tecnology of the 7AT is light years better than the old school Automatics..

IMHO, Manuals are mandatory on certain types of cars. Mainly low hp cars. Because they are so friggin slow and they never put a great shiftable auto on a low hp car worth driving.

Examples:
Subaru BRZ
Scion FR-S
Hyundai gencoupe 2.0T
Mazda 2 & 3
VW Golf/Rabbit or whatever it's called now?
VW beetle
Civic Si
BMW, any model that ends with the #'s 20 or 28
Kia Forte,Rio
Hyundai Accent,Elantra

Cars like the Z, camaro and corvette, these are affordable, high powered sports cars with incredible automatics. I find more benefit in the stock Z in auto, but more benefit in a manual Z for Forced induction mods...
I like the fact that GM uses Tremec automatic transmissions that can hold up to an extra 150hp with only a better cooler and a couple more minor mods to the tranny.

AT's are so good today in some cars that it's really personal preference more than documented advantages...

I know must resist! You getting the new z in stick or auto? How do you see the new manual tranny being for the car.

I agree with other comments on this. I drive in manual mode 99% of the time and row up and down though the gears. To me that's what it's made to do and if it breaks it's under warranty. After years of driving stick this was a nice change, especially when stuck in traffic and just pop it back into auto.
I've driven a few other cars with the tiptronic style auto but none have been as responsive as this tranny. Turn the VDC off, put it in manual and let the fun begin

I already own a Z... Do you mean the next gen?

I don't know yet cuz i try to test drive both. As it stands right now I am forced to agree with you that I prefer the auto, but I definitely don't HATE the manual. I noticed on the 13 models the Z is notchy but positive. It gets into gear perfectly and is much better than the 09, 10 and 11 cars (test rove all years except 12.) If the manual felt like the 13 in 09/11. I might have been swayed. But with dummied down shocks and less steering resistance. Nissan improved the manual and downgraded two other things they had right. throw in corny DRL strip lighting and the 13 is a lose. the auto and manual might be rated for the same torque, but the auto feels like it has 30 or 40 more lbs of torque.

Thats another story though. So the answer is. right now, i do prefer my auto over the comparable year manual.

This has turned into a pissing match...

Drive what you like, who cares what others think. If they say something, they're just jealous and f*ck'em.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. With the SRM-style throttle blip and the nanny TCM, it's hard to screw up too bad. The TCM will not do anything that would destroy itself or the engine. I haven't tested it, but the manual claims that the tranny won't downshift if engine RPM would go above redline.

But I wouldn't suggest downshifting when it would take the RPM above 5000 or so on a regular basis. I nearly always wait for RPM to drop to 2100-1900 before downshifting. This will rev the engine to about 4000. If I wait too long and downshift at the same time as the tranny (~1800 RPM), it can drop down two gears and rev pretty high.

Go for it. Per the manual, you can use the paddle shifters to temporarily go into Manual/Sport mode at any time. No different when using the stick.
