You can downshift it if you want. You just have to learn at what speed and RPM the ECU will automatically drop it down (varies for each gear) and downshift before that -- otherwise you'll end up kicking it down a gear lower than intended.

Note that the ECU learns your shift patterns, so after driving in M mode, it may feel a bit herky-jerky in regular auto afterwards. Not something to worry about, just an FYI.

You can shift over to M while driving without hurting anything, and can even use the paddles to up or downshift while in auto mode -- it will temporarily go to M if you do that, then will revert to regular auto after a few seconds.
