Loose shifter problems
So about nine months ago i installed a TWM short shifter and its been great smooth shifts every time and recently my shifter has gotten really loose. I took it apart to see if it was a issue with the linkage but the rod connecting to the transmission moves with the slightest movement of the shifter. The problem is when i can move the shifter left and right when i have it in gear like a half inch of play in 3rd and 4th gear. In 1,2,5,6th are all fine. Any ideas?

Nobody has advice?
I don't know but I have my TWM kit ready to install. I'm a little concerned now though. Do you really think the looseness is related to the shift kit?
Since nobody else is chiming in, here's my SWAG:
Some kind of bushing/guide is worn and needs to be adjusted or replaced. |
I would check the plastic housing the shifter pivots in to make sure a piece hasn't cracked or broken off. Sometimes the piece can be damaged while hammering the twm shifter in without you knowing.
Hmm yeah thats weird. Im going to pull it all apart tomorrow or tuesday depending on how tomorrow goes and check that plastic piece.
It is definitely related to me putting it in myself and maybe not the shifter. i followed the instructions perfectly, but.... I had a friend under the car who was suppose to tighten the linkage. He probably wasnt my best choice to help but the car was doing great for 9 months after install and all of a sudden like super loose. Called the dealership they said nobody has ever had a problem like that before cause i was concerned with the tranny. But thats not it. |
Maybe somethings came loose. But it would be weird that it would happen after 9 months. In for updates
Yeah i know it is weird thats why i have a concern for it.

Found the problem. Fixed it and it has red loctite on it and is soooo much better!!! |
Whew, good job!
Good thing you caught that now before you got stuck in gear while driving.
Lukas glad you found the problem, you could of given me a call/text for help bro.
Haha yeah im glad i caught it in time before i got stuck in gear. i wouldve texted u but i was waiting on some ramps so i could have room to work under the car. The way i installed it the first time wasnt the safest way.
For anyone who reads this in the future make sure u use red loctite when putting that bolt back into the linkage!! Just as a precaution so this doesnt happen. |
Nice. Thanks for the heads up. I'm installing a SS soon so I'll remember that
Figured that was it. Glad to see it's been fixed, OP.

This thread shows some pretty detailed pics of what it looks like. Just tighten the linkage from under the car that connects to the bottom of the shifter. |
