Hit fuel starvation tonight

Like the title says tonight was the first time I have ever hit fuel starvation. I made a hard right turn getting onto the freeway and then as soon as I straightened the car out, it did not have any power. The car was still "ON" but if I gave it any gas it would just not rev up. So I pull over and try to start the car and nothing. My gas tank goes from 3 dots all the way down to no dots while I was just sitting there. The whole time I was sitting there I was texting Andrew (DEpointfive0) and he was telling me what was to be expected, and how to come about fixing it. I call and text about 10 people and no one is willing to come bring me gas so eventually I called my boss and he stopped by our fab shop and picked up a 5 gallon tank of gas and filled me up. LITERALLY right before I was about to start the car the indash turns off and the battery died. I didn't realize it but I was sitting for over an hour with my lights on and my stereo on. My fault I know, but I didnt realize I was sitting on the side of the road for that long. So my boss goes back tot he shop and gets jumper cables and the car started up after the first try thank god.

I'm still pretty bummed out because I havent even had the car for two months and its starting to give me all sorts of problems. My old 350z had triple the miles and a lot more power and it never gave me one single problem. I guess I just have to be more careful now.

Sorry for the long bs story but I needed to vent my frustration lol. This is just a little reminder that everyone should just be on full if they want to have some fun with their Z. :shakes head:

I keep hearing about problems with the 370z. I put 2300 miles on mine in two weeks with no issues (now im back overseas). Ill make sure to never drive mine 3 dots or less. :ugh2: . Anyone else gone through this?

FairladyZ 03-24-2013 06:19 AM

I've taken it down to 1 dot plenty of times and never filled up to 18 gallons. It's always been around 16.5 or so.....

I'm doing fills at 3 dots now to. Save the fuel pump

NitrousZ34 03-24-2013 06:30 AM

I have been apart of this forum for about 10 months before I got my Z so I knew what to watch out for whenever I got mine. Looks like I'm basically hitting almost every problem there is. Now I'm scared to take hard right turns. That's no fun right there

m4a1mustang 03-24-2013 06:41 AM

That sucks. But yeah, long right hand sweepers on low fuel can be a problem on the street. Some of the track guys even experience it with much more fuel onboard depending on how much lateral force they are experiencing.

Could have been worse... Like being on no dots searching for a fuel station in a bad part of Philly with the top down on your s2000 in winter. ;)

Sorry I couldn't bring you gas brother, but I'm glad I could help a bit, I did diagnose your problem in about 1/4 of a second which I was impressed with, LOL

Sorry to hear what happen its a problem on these cars but luckily I have never experienced this problem and I have actually tried to make it happen by driving hard on and off highway ramps with the gas gauge flashing but it never went.

I would also like to mention that I have recently hit 24,000 miles and I have ZERO problems. The engine does not use an abnormal amount of oil, and the tranny is super smooth.

Yeah you knew exactly what it was lol. I figured thats what it was too, but didn't know how to come about it. Everything you said to do worked. My boss brought 5 gallons of premium, and aside from the dead battery, she started right up.

SPOHN 03-25-2013 07:35 AM

Glad I don't have this issue

EXACT same thing happened to me getting off memorial drive here in Houston. 3 dots till E, long sweeping right hander that once i leveled off car died..... tried starting it several times. had to hail a cab to pick up a gas container and fuel. i was pissed too! i now baby it around turns when low on fuel. crappy design Nissan.....

Cbtech 03-25-2013 06:23 PM

I had this happen to me when i was test driving the car. I had to go get my kid and the dealer was trying really hard to get me to come back so they let me take the car. Since i didnt have a salesman in the car i did a long sweeping curve onto the freeway. I get into the second lane and the exact same thing happened to me... no power but still running. I was able to limp to the side of the road. Mine did start after about 5 mins though and i was able to get to a station. now im scurred of going too low on the dots :eekdance:

and 18 gallon fuel tank??? My Lincoln Navigator took 19...wtf?

DEpointfive0 03-25-2013 06:37 PM

^^^19 gallon

Jasonle 03-25-2013 06:41 PM

Fixed it for you. :p

NitrousZ34 03-27-2013 02:39 AM

I know there is a fix for it, but I cant justify paying that kind of money. You would think Nissan would fix this problem. If they have recalls on the SL why can't they fix fuel starvation. Lameeeee

chknhawk 03-27-2013 03:50 AM

Maybe they just need enough people to complain about it then maybe they will move on it.

Lol I'm sure they would in another 4 years from now just like they did with the SL :ugh2:

Debiandog 02-28-2017 08:44 AM

wholly crap!!! I did not know this issue existed. I hit it for the first time since owning the car. Car stalled at the end of the turn. Had no idea what happened. Thank goodness no one was behind me or to the median of the road.

I will never do any "spirited driving" under a quarter tank again! Fudge that was scary.

Had this happen to me, if you know you have at least some gas in the tank do this. Jack up the driver side rear of the car, the jack works just fine for it. It's helped me when I've made to sharp of a turn on low fuel, once, but I've only had it happen once.

Rusty 02-28-2017 10:01 AM

If you are still moving. You can try and jerk the steering wheel back and forth a few times to try and get the fuel to slosh over.

PaulZ370 03-04-2017 08:16 AM

 ...

1. Put Gas In Car
2. If running low on gas, don't take long sweeping right handers at full throttle and expect a different result then complain about the car
3. 5 years in the 370Z and never ever experienced a "Fuel Starvation" event despite spirited drives all over...
4. See #1 above

(Side Note: Patrick Stewart is a Douche, but the icon is cool!)

unijabnx 03-04-2017 09:13 AM

I have driven my Z down to 1 dot even had the "low fuel" message warning come up... always made it to the gas station without any issues.

Even on a track day with near empty fuel tank I never had starvation issues.:driving:

You're not pushing the car hard enough. :driving:

Not really sure your point. I didn't even know the car had this problem. Yet this issue caused me to almost have an accident. I hit the (unknown to me) issue going maybe 90 on a long turn that maybe took 20 seconds to get through.

I love all the asshat comments "it never happened to me so it doesn't exist" or " Simple Solution... keep gas in your car". fanboys or tools!
