this is true but the oil cannot go past 3k miles before its toast. also its 3 times the price of the mobil1 5w-30 im running.

as far as performance i see ZERO difference. as far as protecting the engine....... i hope its doing its job.

200-210 on a cool day (50F) at 80mph on the highway. Any stop and go traffic (same temp) and I'm to 230-240 in a hurry. Warm day in summer and I'm lucky if the temps ever get below 230.

I wouldn't sweat 230 honestly. Oil viscosity is tested at 210 degrees. My feeling is modern synthetic oil should hold fine at 230.

I always wonder, do the 3.5 maxima, Altima and FX/M37 ever have this oil temp "problem"? I think the oil temp gauge is making us z guys a little too conscious (myself included)..

Having said all that, being a car lover, there's nothing wrong with preferring a cooler oil temp.

Yes they do, my old Maxima would burn up oil, so I assume the new one will too!

When I got my oil change at the dealership not to long ago they used m1 0w-40 .

To my knowledge, only the VHR motors really have a serious oil temp issue.

The heads generate a lot of heat on the valve train and the only coolant up there is the oil itself.

There's a steel-on-steel junction in the valve train that heats up bad. Look at any disassembly pics of our heads, you'll see where the steel has turned blue from the heat near that junction.

0w-40 from a dealership? Really? By your special request???

^ nope I didn't even ask honestly they offered m1 or Nissan Ester and Ester was going to cost like 40$ more so I went with m1 and service guy said he recommended m1 better then I noticed it was 0w-40

I use 5w-30 and oil temps hardly go over 220....

I do know that GTM packages 0w-40 with their forced induction kits.... Fwiw

0W-40 is a great oil. I'm sure 5w-30 is too. I ran stock, Nissan spec, for my first change. Since then, I've been using the M1. I just think I have a hot running car, and no matter what oil I put in the results will be the same.

Sorry I brought the whole temp thing into this discussion. Back on topic...OP, you're fine with whatever oil the manual says, but a lot of us use 0w40. It works great and lasts for quite a while...even when it's worked hard. The OA's don't lie.

What do you guys think... if your engine consumes a little bit of oil, switching to 0w40 might help?

If your engine is CONSUMING oil, you need a new engine... If your car is burning oil, nothing will help really, (To me consuming is done because of a broken piston ring or a valve leak or something, while burning is when the oil gets hot, and goes through the PCV system) so make sure you know which one it is

In theory going with a thicker oil will help if your car consumes oil... But going with a 0W, would probably be worse because it will consume just as much if not more oil because the thin oil can move anywhere


Old school thinking, car uses 5W30, when it hits 100k, move to 10W30 or 10W40
