"Chirping" on ignition

Just noticed today but when I start the engine there's a slight "chirp" that comes from the engine. No idea what's causing it or if I should even be concerned.

Default "Chirping" on ignition

Just noticed today but when I start the engine there's a slight "chirp" that comes from the engine. No idea what's causing it or if I should even be concerned. Ignore it?

Edit: Chirp is there on multiple startup attempts (consistently).

Maybe a belt? Just speculating. I hope someone with more technical knowledge than me chimes in.

The car is less than a year old. I would hope it's not a belt. It may work itself out - it has been awfully cold here recently so that could be a contributing factor but I tend to worry so...

Pully. I think thats what he meant. Open the hood while on if its a pully you will hear it do to the bearing.

Does it happen when you start with the engine warm?
If not, I think dmhenderson is on the right track - belt slippage when the belt is cold. If it is a belt squeal, the belt(s) looks good, and it's only a chirp when cold, I wouldn't worry unless it gets worse.

Someone listening to the engine compartment while you crank may be able to tell where the noise is coming from.

Yeah only noticed today when parked outside at work and starting it to go to lunch. Chirped on multiple ignition attempts and again when leaving lunch but I'm thinking you're right, it's because it's freaking cold outside.

I don't think that SomeGuyOnTheInternet doing a remote diagnosis is any kind of proof that it's just a cold belt and nothing to worry about.

It could be many things, including pulleys, bearings, pumps, &c. I recommend getting someone to listen while you crank and verify that it is just the belt. If it is confirmed to be the belt, make sure the belt is in good condition.

I know what a bearing squeal sounds like and this isn't it - plus unlikely it'd only do that for a second on startup. If it persists or get worse, I'll definitely get it looked at.

Belts look fine. It's not a bearing and doesn't make the noise once the car is warmed up. Case closed
