Default Synthetic Oil for 370z; Amsoil?

I am a very dedicated believer in the benefits of synthetic motor oils and am in the process of deciding which brand I want to go with for my new 370z.

Whilst looking for coupons through google I cam across a brand of synthetic that I had never heard of; Amsoil.

They make some pretty big claims such as extended draining intervals of 25K miles, increased fuel economy (up to 8%) and so on.

Has anyone had any experience with this brand of synthetic oil or know anything about them?

Thanks!

Yep, they've been around for a long time.

Most 100% synthetic brands claim increased fuel economy.

I've got a box of Amsoil 5W-30 sitting on a shelf to be used when it's time for my first oil change.

Amsoil is good stuff. Service intervals can be longer than most people run, but for $40 worth of oil....why risk it.

I didnt try it on the HR motor, but on the 350Z, Amsoil 5w-40 made the car A LOT more quiet, the ticking noise from the valve went away. Oil pressure was also up, especially after track sessions. I honestly didn't get the same effect in my other cars, but on the VQ it worked great.

After reading up on some other threads, does anyone know if the Amsoil is an ester based oil?

Also, cossie1600, how much did it go up?

From what I understand its a Group 4 oil that either doesnt have ester or has an ester additive which is different from ester based.

Some people seemed to have good results with Redline which from what I recall is ester-based. I'm in the process of doing some in-depth research on oils and plan on contacting all of the vendors. Will report back in the next couple weeks or so...

Actually that isn't correct. RP, REdline and Motul 300V only are Group 4 based oils with Amsoil.

Amsoil XL line is a Group 3/4.

I have been on that site for many years and will tell you it is a Group 4 not a 5. Read more than just a few posts into it and look at the lab results. Group 4 with some PAO in the oil. RP isn't even close to Group 5 it is more of a Group 3 oil in tests done. And sales marketing will put anything on their labels to make you think it is a Group 5 when in reality and tests show it isn't.

It just went up enough to stay off the zero range. I remember after tracking the car hard, the needle would stay a smudge above the 0 line, the Amsoil double that gap. Also the ticking went away

I went with the 5w40 European oil, not the XL stuff. I drained mine at 5K and had no problems

Default Amsoil was the first synthetic

It came out before Mobil 1. It is very good and you can read more then you want to know about this group IV oil on Bobistheoilguy. Most folks in the know respect Amsoil and it is always at or near the top in most folks choice. I have done various oil analysis with Blacktone with it and it always performs very well even beyond 12,000 miles. I have not used it in a Z but on two other vehicles it has far exceeded my expectations even keeping a great TBN at over 12-15,000 miles. Not sure if I would run the 370Z over 12,000 on an oil change without monitoring the oil analysis but they say their best signiture can get 25,000 without breaking down. Not sure but I have seen over 20,000 with good TBN numbers which to me means that the oil still has plenty of additives.

I use to use Amsoil before it went up in price. So I went with the next best thing Penzoil Platinum as many have tested it with Blackstone labs to be great and it is one of the best ones you can get now from the store. Better than M1.

Welcome if you want to do some good reading on different oils, tests, etc.

Can you show me some information regarding Pennzoil Platinum? I'm particulary interested in it's group number and testing results.

I have read some reviews on the oil guy forums and it seems to supported widely as an excellent oil. I am particularly interested in what group its under, if it contains esters, etc...

I had the Nissan dealership put their Ester oil in at my last service interval. It cost me ten bucks more than synthetic.

yup...the service manual says the 370's need Ester Oils. I just opened an account with Motul and received my first shipment of 300V to offer our customers. I run 300V in my personal race car...good stuff!
