Did they change the wording? I'm fairly certain it says "strongly recommended", but not "required".

I have been on that site for many years and will tell you it is a Group 4 not a 5. Read more than just a few posts into it and look at the lab results. Group 4 with some PAO in the oil. RP isn't even close to Group 5 it is more of a Group 3 oil in tests done. And sales marketing will put anything on their labels to make you think it is a Group 5 when in reality and tests show it isn't.

Both the Owner's Manual and Service manual simply say "recommended", not "strongly recommended" or "required".

The problem is, we don't know exactly which esters are used in the Nissan Ester Oil. While other synthetic oils like Mobil 1 and Amsoil may have esters, they may not be the ones that work best with the DLC coating on the valvetrain.

Ok, so I was incorrect abou the RP.

Why do you swear by PP? I see it does well with UOA for other cars, but I don't know how well that will apply with the VQ37VHR.

Going back to the owners manual, I feel that if there was an oil that needed to be used, it would mention it.

The only thing it requires is the oil meeting the API standards (I think).

Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

I don't swear by them. But for $20 bucks how can you go wrong? It comes back with very good lab results on wear. it performs almost as good as Amsoil, at half the cost.

It just went up enough to stay off the zero range. I remember after tracking the car hard, the needle would stay a smudge above the 0 line, the Amsoil double that gap. Also the ticking went away

I went with the 5w40 European oil, not the XL stuff. I drained mine at 5K and had no problems

Amsoil is not an ester based oil. It is a group IV PAO. Amsoil does use some esters in its' compressor oils but not in the line of auto oils to my knowledge. They do use many additives but do not think ester is one but if it is, they do not advertise it. There have been pros and cons to esters as with any products and one has to do the research to determine what is best for their vehicles. Amsoil may do just as good or better then Nissan ester being it is a great oil but we will have to wait for oil tests and for folks to put many miles on these engines to determine which oil is best. Amsoil does get more mileage from their oils than many others but will this also lessen the friction on the valve train? Again, too soon to tell. All I can add is do the research and look at bobistheoilguy.com and learn as much as possible about what you are putting in your car....Also, do not over look a great filter as many folks put expensive oil in a car then add an inferior filter due to trying to save a few bucks.

After doing quite a bit of research I have decided to go with Red Line products... now to decide on a filter... lol.

Thoughts on the Purolator PureOne filter?

I think the purolator PureOne is a very good filter. I used the filter for years before I switched to the Mobil 1. Not sure there is any real difference but thought the Mobil one was made tad better. Some think the PureOne filters down too low and can build up too much pressure and thus can trigger the bypass valve. Most of the filter tests found it to be a very good filter. Will not name the filters that did not do well as that can start a war but I do not think you can go wrong with the PureOne. If I remember correctly there may be some concern also with the way the bypass valve is placed in the filter but most believed it was not a valid concern unles you use it in very cold conditons and then it may be prone to moisture freezing in it. I don't remember this ever happening to anyone but just a design concern which may never come to reality in real life conditions. As I said, I have used the filter for many years and only changed to Mobil1 in the past several years when I could not get the Amsoil filters for one of my cars. I would rate the PureOne filter in the top three made.

I agree about the PureOne, and to top it off its about 1/2 the price of a K&N or M1 filter.

ETA: I think Im going with Redline.
