Curious sound from the transmission??

Have you noticed?? If you drive a MT, while the car is idling, there is a low frequency continuous sound that's present which disappears when the clutch is engaged (?? from the transmission). It's very slight so you have to pay attention to hear it.

My local mechanic said it's likely a bearing going bad in the transmission that may cause big issues if not attended to... I then spoke to a certified Nissan mechanic at one of the dealers and he said it's a normal sound due to the high performance nature of the transmission/engine...

Does any of you have any experience with this? please share.

thx

To clarify, when you say engaged, do you mean when you push the clutch lever with your foot, which actually disengages the clutch? Chances are it's the throwout bearing. Try adjusting your pedal engagement & see if it changes sound.

Felix, correct; when I depress the clutch... some of the other members confirmed that its the bearing. thx for the reply

Hey NP. The reason I say to try different pedal strokes is having owned a variety of manual transmissions over the years I found some of them would make more noise if the pedal was pushed too far in. I'm guess as with most hydraulic clutches there is not any real adjustment for the linkage, but my Z's an Auto so what the heck do I know :p
