They'd have to test drive it HARD for it to do that.

Aftermarket ECUs typically have a Valet map where you can limit the RPMs. It's not quite as simple as just a different key though.

I've had this happen to me only one time in the 14 or so months I've had the car.
I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the oil temps... When it happened to me, the Z had been sitting for hours at work after the normal commute in to the office. When I got back in it after work, it started limiting the revs to around 2.5K. After realizing the temps were below normal I pulled the car into a parking space, turned it off, and popped the hood. After inspecting the engine bay for a second, I couldn't find anything visually wrong with it (leaking fluids, disconnected wires or tubes, ect..). After only a few minutes I started it back up and it has been working fine ever since.

I had this happen to me once (and only once thank god) I turned off the car let it sit for a few minutes fired it back up and it hasn't happened since. No one has figured out a reason why thus far.

Same thing is happening to me right now, I'm letting it cool down and I hope it goes away.
