Battery Removal
I need to remove the battery from my Z and notice it is some what of a process. Does anyone know, are the plastic pieces that go over the windshield adhered to the window in any way?
|
Nope.
Here's the how-to sheet. (Thanks to rhd for the link) http://www.the370z.com/attachments/d...moval-cowl.pdf |
I can't seem to get the wiper arms off. The bolt was stubborn but got it off... Do you just pull on the arm?
|
Wait, I need an exploded diagram to replace my battery????
|
I think you have to be a fully certified car builder...Not a ideal location.
|
Wow, removing a battery couldn't be THAT hard can it?
|
You wouldn't expect it to, but going in not expecting it and while the diagram helps... it is still more than should be required.

While this is a bit off topic it is about battery removal woes...
Going back a few years a friend of mine had a C4 vette as did I at the time. He asks me one Sunday to drop by and assist him with getting the battery out. The C4 battery was located on the driver side behind the wheel in that huge engine bay those cars had. Located right over the battery was the master cylinder and a few other goodies preventing easily lifting it out. I arrive to find the brakes have been bled and he is starting to get the master cylinder off the firewall. I stopped him there, loosened the bolts in the wheel well (30 sec job)that held the small body panel with the gills in it that covered the battery allowing the battery to be slid out sideways. His wife thought we were both nuts as we laughed our a$$es off for a good ten minutes :rofl2: I went and picked up the new battery while he put his car back together. Sorry couldn't find pics to help you see how simple it actually was versus the work he though he had to do |
Does the wiper arm really have to come off to remove the battery? If so, did you manage to get it off?
|
It does because you have to remove most of the plastic panels that are at the bottom of the windshield. To do this, the wiper arms must come off. Not the greatest engineering in my opinion.

Battery Removal
The window wiper arms do not have to be removed to change the battery.
The plastic panels do have to be removed on only the passenger side. I have changed out my 370Z car battery without removing the window wipers or the plastic panels on the driver's side. It was an easy removal since the plastic panels are fasten with speed clips. Most likely, the service manual that you can download from this web site illustrates the location of the speed clips and plastic panels. |
Well shoot. I followed the directions found in the post above. Is there an easier approach to this? If so, do you have directions for it?

370Z Battery Removal
no need to remove the center/driver side cowl plastic piece...just remove the plastice speed clips that fasten this section of thte cowl to the vehicle. You must remove the passenger side cowl piece though.
|
up above is correct. I did this over the weekend. took about 5 minutes. you do not need to remove anything but the pieces on the passenger side and definitely not the wiper arms...
|
I also replaced the battery recently. Only removed the battery cover - 3, the "hoodledge cover RH - 5," and the "cowl top cover RH - 1," as they're referred to in the diagram. It wasn't necessary to remove the last item completely, as I recall. I did need to tilt the battery a bit forward to lift it out after removing the hold-down bracket.
|
in my 09, i didnt have to remove anything but the plastic battery cover. then reinstalled a optima battery with out breaking anything

Question to the group, when and if the battery is removed and replaced, what will need to be reset beside the Windows? |
No need to remove the wiper arms. Just pull the blades/arms away from the windshield to make a little extra room.
It may help to check some of the SLU fuse removal DIYs - the IPDM-E/R, where the fuse is located, is right next to the battery. You have to remove the same parts to get to the SLU fuse and the battery. You will have to reset your radio presets and the windows when you get done. Procedures are on this site. |

I just wanted to post a reply to this thread, I found it extremely helpful.
For those looking to swap the battery out you only need to remove on the diagram: -#3 the battery cover -#5 -#1 once you pull the old battery and swap it out, just put it all back together. On my 2010, i also had to pull the rubber weather strip up to get number 1 out. there are 4 little pins that you must pull up (they go back in easily). However this may differ for other models.. Once installed, simply follow the window guide to reset the auto window feature. I left my windows closed during the entire process, than followed the guide for resetting the auto windows and was done quickly. -agodofgame |
Battery Replacement 2009 Z
Fairly easy job on the 09 (wiper arms do not need to be removed), but 2 plastic dress pieces do need to come out (held in with ~6 plastic clips - easily removed & can be reused).
Bought Interstate battery at local Costco for a great price (~$70 bucks) - correct replacement size (35) and about 60 more CCA (640 CCA versus 580 original battery).... Only issue was windows needing to be reset (to properly reseat when closing doors) following battery change. Very easy reset - 5-minute procedure on this site)... GE |
Pretty simple job by following instructions posted in this thread. I notice that the Nissan 370Z service manual states: "Always replace EPT sealers with a new one if the cowl top cover is reused". I assume this is the grey, round "rubbery" looking thing? Has anyone replaced this or just put the cowl back on with the old one still in place? Any issues with reusing the old one? Water leaks? I can't find EPT sealer listed on any Nissan parts website. Any ideas where to get now ones? Thanks.

What the heck are ept sealers? I've had those plastic covers off and in several times and the biggest risk is losing one of the plastic speed clips lol

100pcs Plastic Rivet Fastener Mud Flaps Bumper Fender Push Clips 8mm for Nissan | eBay I don't even reuse them now. I just always put in new ones. |

I re-use mine as well,,,occasionally one will break...& i'm thinking there is one near the front left (around core support/headlamp) that uses a short or cut down version.
|
I get plastic rivets from my favorite body shop. I pay a little more than what you can get them for on eBay but the shop is just 3-4 miles from the house.

There are at least a couple of sizes for Nissans; I have a Versa and a Murano in addition to the Z. Bought mine at Amazon - they work pretty well - haven't broken one yet. Kinda rough-looking but way cheaper than factory: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AGDGCH0 (smaller) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ASWEGQ (larger, for fender wells, etc.) --ZOM |
