The oil light may as well not be there. When I was going down the road after about 4k post oil change, I started hearing valvetrain noise. When I got home, I checked the oil- no reading. Drained it out- less than a quart.

Nice way to find out about your oil consumption, whee.

So, yeah- moral of the story, don't rely on the oil light.

Also, OP, it sounds like your engine was faulty. If things are as you described them, your oil change intervals had nothing to do with the failure.

The VQ35 and 37 engines have been known for sporadic oil consumption issues. Just enjoy your new engine and keep an eye on your oil level. Every 1k miles or so starting out and every couple of thousand miles after that (after you've verified no excess consumption) is enough, imo.

Take the oil cooler out and have the dealership look into your issue. You should be covered under the drivetrain - they ll most likely look in your oil changes schedules. if they realize or get out of you that there was an oil cooler involved, you are screwed.

Best of luck friend.

I strongly disagree that he will be screwed. If the engine is burning oil, there's nothing the cooler is going to do to impact that.

If there's a leak, however, that could be different.

The dealer will blame it on the aftermarket oil cooler to get out of forking over a new engine under warranty.

---------------------------------------

OP, you said the car was in an accident? How bad was the accident?

And you were going 8,000 miles between oil changes?

If they see the oil cooler, they WILL point it as the source of the engine problem and as such will impose the labor/part costs to the owner. They will not care about the burning oil issue. PERIOD.

Best course of action is to take the oil cooler out, take the documentation for the oil changes and make your case about potential oil burning issue and see where that takes you.

i run a car dealership and we celebrate what the factory pays for a big job like an engine, we have no interest in arguing with a customer over coming up with 8k for a new motor!! The factory is very strict with claims of this magnitude though not the dealer, we want the work!!

This isn't the '70s anymore. BMW recommends an oil change even 15k/year on some vehicles. I think it's the same on my mom's new Benz.

We don't own BMWs...

Whether the oil is good for 3k or 30k is really not the issue... the issue is that if you don't follow Nissan's maintenance schedule they have every right to deny your warranty claim if that failure to follow causes the damage.

I'm sorry if it hurts your feelings but there is no rational explanation to not changing/checking the oil level for that long of a period. Even if you own a BMW and have 15k intervals, you would still be insane for going any extended time (1-2 months) without checking the level. You argue that it should be Nissans fault since they know the car burns oil... well doesn't that mean YOU know it burns oil too? 7k on a car that burns oil?

In addition if the car had a bad knock and the check engine light was flashing it was not wise to drive/rev the car even if you went right to the dealership... it was likely that the damage was already done but you definitely avoided any chance of saving the block that way.

I do agree that if the level was that low that the dealership should have noticed but you also should have at a minimum asked them to change it while you were there since it was so long since your last change.

I hope it works out and they end up covering it but in the future you have to help yourself and not neglect recommended maintenance and then deny all responsibility for the premature failure. Even if just to satisfy the document requirements for any warranty repairs... I document everything I do on the car with receipts and mileage just for that reason. IMO the dealership has SOME fault in this but majority is yours.
