HYPERTECH programmed great, then car no start
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I programmed my car today with a hypertech unit without issue and it ran great. I decided to update the software because I purchased the unit used. When I went to reprogram my car I inadvertently removed the cable before it was finished. Now the car will not start and when I plug in the unit I get "unit cannot read ecu" or something like that. Please help asap. |

you possibly just bricked your ecu. I read threads on the mazdaspeed forums of the same thing happening with the Cobb access ports. people had to get their car reflashed at the dealer, or if that was unsuccessful, get a new ecu. hope that is not the case for u. take it to nissan and hope they will reflash your ecu and it works. it won't be warrantied due to you tampering with the ecu if it needs replacement.

IMO, that ECU is cooked. The best you can do is play dumb with your dealer if you're under warranty.
Otherwise, the part is close to $1k USD before a couple of hours labor to get it actually programmed. |

I know with UpRev, you can mail the ECU to them and have them put on a stock map/salvage your ECU. I don't know if hypertech does the same (although I'm sure UpRev would love to reflash your ECU for a nice fee).
I'm trying to find information on UpRev but I can't remember where I read that someone was willing to salvage ECUs... so take my information with a grain of salt.

With UpRev you can recover it yourself. I have been there done that.

I would start here. DIY: Replace dreaded steering-lock on 2009s and early 2010s. P.S. The best thing to do would be to take it to the dealer and not say a word about the hypertech. Then they should be able to tell you if the ecu is bricked. If the ecu is NOT bricked then I would be willing to bet that it is the steering lock. |

only problem with what everyone is saying is that OP mentioned he pulled the plug before it was done flashing the ECU, when it comes to any kind of computer with a flash ROM this is a big no no as it will brick the BIOS on the mainboard and the only way to recover it is either to pray you are lucky enough to be able to reflash it somehow or send it in to the manufacturer to have the board reset basically, hopefully in the OP's case he is lucky.

Thanks for the replies and ideas guys.
had the dealer try to reflash the ecm with no luck. They told me I needed a new ecm. 1200$ I will be searching for used one. I had no intention of lying to the dealership. Just told them what happened and hoped for the best. Spoke with hypertech customer service. They seemed very thorough and are trying to help me out. We will see how far that goes. Even trying to get in touch with uprev to see if they can do anything. If you know of anyone selling an ecm please let me know. Thanks again, Steve |
