Popped out of gear - damage?

Due to the terrible roads in my area my car ended up being engulfed in a gigantic hole left from a recently milled road last night. Fortunately I was coming from a dead stop and was only going around 2-3mph when it happened. However, it was so abrupt that the car totally popped out of 1st and into neutral. I haven't had time to get under the car yet to check for any suspension damage (thank god my Volks were spared!!!), but would this have caused any detriment to the tranny?

Most likely not, there is a point in the cars when you are slowing down that the gears aren't being forced to move (i.e. accelerating or slowing) and the tranny can slip out of gear. You can actually practice it when you are coming to a stop slightly pull on the shifter as if you are going to come out of gear and it will slide out. I seriously doubt if this damaged anything.

This :iagree:

It's a funny trick to play on people, but harder in the 350/370 has the shifter is higher. On light throttle or less, you can easily slip it into neutral and see how long it takes for them to realise, some people even just push the accel harder and rev the nuts off it.

(yes i've done this to a few people :stirthepot: )

Thanks for the replies everybody, the car seems to be driving fine today so thats a good thing. I might throw it back up on the rack to make sure the alignment didn't jump out of spec.

Might want to check your alignment
