Z1 Oil Cooler-Experience
I mostly read the information posted to this forum (often and extensively) but I am looking for some advice from real world experiences. I am going to purchase either the Z1 25 or 34 row oil cooler. I am not looking for opinions, the search feature is full of this topic but often provides no credible data. If you have a 25 row please post what you know from experiences with your own car, does it run over 220 if ambient air is above 85 degrees. For those with 34 row do you have issues getting the oil to temp (180) in everyday driving. I guess the most important question is with both what max temps are you seeing while spirited driving in above average temps (85-90 degrees).
Also regarding the mounting of the oil cooler, it seems everyone has a different opinion, mount the fittings down, sideways and up. Is there any credible reason any of these 3 do harm to the performance of the cooler/cooling? Oil Filter, currently running mobil 1 M110. Not interested in running FRAM or puralator, what are you running? If all else fails in the advice category I will just go with plan B, 34r and customized aluminum/velcro block off plate. Any help is greatly appreciated. |

I have 25-row and a purolator oil filter.
Bearing in mind that the temperature reading is the temp of oil going back in the engine (not coming out), my needle doesn't move north of 200 degrees, and I've run it pretty damn hard in 80 degree temperatures. Haven't hit 100 degree yet, but that's only a month or so away. Aluminum/velcro block off plate is a good idea. I'm going to make one of those soon myself. Running this car in 50 degrees or less, your engine will have a hard time getting up to temp. It is also worth noting that where I am, the climate is much cooler and more humid on average than where you are. |

I run a 34 row. I track my car. Even on Hot days in NOLA I may see 240 to 260 if I am lucky. In the winter here N Florida I have Zero issue with getting the oil warm. I see about 170-185 with straight oil cooler. this is with windchill in the teens. I don't by into the " Whole Over Cooling " thing myself.
If your not tracking just get the 25. It's plenty.

I have the Z1 25 row and live in Los Angeles. No problems getting the oil to 180 within about 5 minutes. Not surprisingly, the oil cooler didn't do much in stop and go driving so I had a fan added. That did it.
You may want to consider getting Uprev'd and have the radiator fan start temps changed before you get the cooler.

I drove my Z to Fairfax VA one saturday in rain and 50 degree temps. Took the car nearly 40 minutes to get up to temp. |

Water on the cooling element would very much increase its ability to cool. If the temperatures are in the teens, the air was probably rather dry, making it easier to heat up even in low temps.

Some good knowledge in here. Great thread, thanks guys. Also in for the answer regarding max oil capacity with a 34r.
*Also, any real difference between the Z1 and GTM kits beside the price?
