i got the 7at and love it. the manual mode is fun, i use it 90% of the time.
the tranny will downshift for you, but i dont think it upshifts automatically in manual mode. 1/4 mile times shouldnt be noticeably different, unless you are a beast with a stick. in fact, if you check the 1/4 mile times sticky post, the best bone stock 1/4 mile time was done in a 7at. but it all depends on the driver. i like it, its like a lazy man's manual lol

In both my 05 and 07 ATs, I launched in Drive at 3000 and just let the transmission shift itself at just below redline. Worked out fine in bracket racing at Branson Z Fest, won in both cars.

manual mode is very fun, I use it 100% of the time, The tranny will downshift " Only when you are slowing down" If you floor it is will not shift down you have to.. it will NOT up shift no matter how many times you are bounching of the REV limiter,,

To launch the car, ZCAR DAD your lucky, my car will hit 3k then drop to 2k, Launches terriable,, 60ft times where all over 2.1. .. I just roll out of the box and still I nail is and there is a HUGE pause before it takes off.

I really like the AT with the 370Z. Manual mode and paddles when I want to use them.

This is coming from someone who has always had a manual car for the past 25 years or so. Before the Z, my last car was a WRX and I would not have gotten an AT with the WRX.

AT will upshift automatically only if you use the paddles when NOT in manual mode.

I have a 6spd manual and find it a bit clunky. While I won't praise the manual transmission, I wouldn't get the automatic if I had to re-buy a 370Z.

Do a search and then test drive both.

It really is a preference thing....I too found the 370Z manual clunky...or I should say not as smooth as compared to a BMW tranny.

The 7AT is a better choice...imo

The 7AT I must say is pretty fun. I like how is doesn't restrict you and start shifting for you and stuff like that. Also the downshifts are pretty nice, as far as the sound and feel. I just like that I get up and going at anytime by the click of a paddle.

The 7at is great. If you'd like an auto or see a lot of traffic the 7at is an auto that still allows you to have some fun while driving. If you just got to have a stick then get the manual. But I love the way the 7at's paddels bang off flawless rev-matched downshifts at the apex of every corner.

I always had the mindset that a sports car should have a manual transmission. Then I test drove my car and played with the paddles. It takes some getting used to but it's fun when you want it and nice to just cruise in auto when the traffic sucks.
