10 or 13 row Oil Cooler

All you hear about is 19, 25, 34 row oil coolers. Nobody makes a smaller kit so I have been thinking of fabbing one up with a setrab series 6- 10 or 13 row cooler.

Has anyone used a core smaller then 19 row?

Car is street driven only. At 75* ambient, car oil sits just under 220*.
With summer months aproaching, this has me worried....


Dont want to worry about a block off plate in winter or oil never passing 160* as I hear quite often.

I know the supras came with a factory oil cooler that were only 7 or 8 row fyi.

For me that size was bother or just waste of money. Go at least 19.

I was thinking about the same. There was a guy on here saying thay he had a hard time getting 160 degrees with a 19 row cooler. Maybe a 13 or less with a thermostatic plate? I was thinking about that combo. Any ideas?

get a 19 row at the min.

and come to the z1 dyno day and the following mountain cruise!

I live in south louisiana (about 30 mins from gulf) with a 25 row cooler w/thermo plate. In the winters here around town stop and go traffic or interstate doing 75 the temp would get to 180* and sit there. On the other hand during the summer months with 90+ temps it wouldn't get over 200* ever. Went to the track and made 7 back to back passes and it only got up to 220* for a very short time. By the time i made a pass and got back in line and up again to make another (about 15 mins) it was back down to 180*.

Will get a thermoplate. You know how georgia winter time can be. 30 deg in the morning and 75 in the afternoon. I am just worried that oil wont get hot enough. Do you think 25 row will require a block plate duing winter?

I wish i could go to z1...have to work that day....

I'd say yes look into to a block off plate for the winter. I've seen new metal for sale signs bent, painted black and velcroed to their cooler. Also seen painters tape on the cooler then block off plate and it worked.

Anything smaller would be used for the power steering. There sure has been a lot of GA guys on here lately.

Heck at 80 degrees my car after two short 4th gear blasts on the freeway my oil temp was at 260 degrees. That temp will climb quickly and it sad that acceleration does that. Makes me wonder if our cars have oil squirters for the pistons. Seems that there is not enough oil or cooling measures in the motor. I think I noticed and I may be wrong, but the heads don't have rolller tapets instead they have the old shim and cup which creates a bunch of friction and heat and are not really designed for high rpm. We have a tiny oil filter that looks like it would filter a 1.5 liter KIA.

So I am sure the oil circulating just gets hot in minutes and was designed to do this, which a oil to water cooler woulld have done with larger amount of oil and bigger oil filter.

I bet if we were all to get a petition going and file a class action lawsuit or just make a big stink we could get this oil temp problem resolved by Nissan. Japaneese hate loosing face or to seem dishonorable. I personally would like a free replacement under warranty. Or if I already invested in a replacement some compensation.

Who ever designed the motor must have been living in a time bubble for the past 22 years.

Yeah it's not worth it for the smaller one, just get a 19-row (which is still fairly small), and use a blockoff in the winter if you have to. Keep in mind any add-on oil cooler is adding some known risks to the car. The factory oil system is all inside the block, you're adding high-pressure oil lines and fittings wrapping around to the cooler in the front. If one of those hoses blows while driving you have very little time to save the engine before it's toast.

Be very sure about the quality of the installation, and consider adding an oil pressure gauge / alarm at the same time. Or just don't do it all unless you're really seeing damagingly-high temps on a regular basis. I wouldn't even worry about it unless you're reaching 240 regularly and have seen some 250+ spots in conditions that are likely to be repeated.

actually depends where u live and the temp in your area. if the weather cool in morning and mild in afternoon and just for dd (NO TRACK) then u dont bother with the oil cooler just waste for money and time to do the installation. i live here in texas! when summer (90+) all the time so i think i needed it! anyone here can post a thermostatic plate for me? and where i can get it? thanks!

So nobody has run anything smaller then 19 row? As mentioned earlier, don't want to mess with a block off plate. Just need a bit of extra cooling for the summer months.

No, 19 is about the smallest used for OIL cooling in the z. Anything smaller is power steering cooler size.

That does seem to be the general consensus, however I hear alot of guys runing the 19 row have trouble getting over 160 degrees in colder ambient temps without running block off plate.

Maybe a smaller row cooler would be best for all year around daily drive?

no offense man. but you have mentioned that a few times, but time and time again people tell you that you shouldnt get less than 19 row...

at some point, your either gonna start listening to the advice youve asked for... or not.

but once again!

at minimum get the 19row. no, a smaller one wouldnt be better for all year daily driving.
