2nd to 5th? Anyone ever mis-shift this one?

Default 2nd to 5th? Anyone ever mis-shift this one?

Well, break-in period is coming to a close and I have been increasing my aggressiveness driving the Z. I don't think 4,000rpm max at 1199miles and then 7500rpm in another mile is smart, or sensible, so I have slowly been increasing things after I reached the 600 mile mark (My 'vette was 500 mile break-in, 1500 miles until HPDE's, per the manual and metal is metal, gears are gears...).


Anyway, the 370Z has a very tight shift pattern apparently. I was wringing 2nd out to about 6500rpm or so when I shifted, and went 2-5th. I heard what sounded like "Zffffffftttt!" which I imagine was clutch slip, and the rpms dropped rapidly to 5th gear rpms even though my foot was flat on the floor (I did not immediately know what had occurred).

I smelled no clutch smell, and the car shifted fine afterward. Take-off in first is smooth, and there is no indication that the clutch has began to engage when engaging in first very slowly with the parking-brake on aside from the engine bogging. T/O bearing rattle remains at its normal level (annoying if you know what it is, not noticeable if you don't know to listen for it, I hear this is the norm on the 370Z).

I doubt this is any more damaging than slipping the clutch at the drag strip, but I wanted to ask...anyone do this? Did the car implode? Kinda scares me that the engine didn't immediately bog and the rpms shoot down to 5th gear type rpms and that they rapidly drifted down instead.

Anyway, thought I would ask. Have never really done this before in any of my other cars.

Interesting

Did you have SRM turned on? I'm assuming not if the RPM's stayed around 6500.

Could have been a clutch slip, could also have been throttle lag or VDC. Did you notice the VDC light flash on or not? Remember, even if turned off VDC is still somewhat active. The Z has a bit of an electric throttle lag. Sometimes when I stomp the peddle, there's a good half second before the car reacts to the pedal. It's like the Z is going, "Really, f*cker?!" before responding.

Was probably mostly eaten up in the clutch. Your 5th gear synchros probably dont love you as much, but they will survive.

Meh, now I am paranoid and hear the T/O bearing way more than I used to (mental I think).

Clutch in, Neutral, parked, rev, no whine. Clutch out, neutral, parked, rev, whines.

The tob noise is totally normal.

Btw, you generally won't feel/hear it when you rough up synchros early on.

Eh, I was not speed or power-shifting. I really don't think I hurt a synchro (I did some amazingly stupid things in my Trans Am, like a ton of 2-3-2's and that T56 lived just fine for 150K miles until I sold it). Mainly, I just am hyper-sensetive to that T/O bearing whine now, lol. It really is super noticeable, but I think I do remember thinking "Is that my Z1 intake tube and drop-in doing that?" when I revved my car a bit after installing them, so likely I am just hyper-sensetive to it for a bit. Anyway, you say prominent (if you listen for it) whine on low-speed accel/decel and when revved in gear with the clutch engauged is normal? It reminds me of some GM alternators or a VERY VERY quiet SC.

Either way, going to all Red Line fluids Thursday morning.

I was in 5th and mis-shifted into 4th instead of 6th. I guess I just down-shifted .

Default 2nd. to 5th than to 4th.

A couple of years ago I was at Lebanon Valley drags. Frustration with traction & 2nd gear problems caused me to get sloppy & I did go from 2nd. to 5th. then back to 4th. Showed the time slip to Chritopher/Lakeside (a nice guy). Still managed a 13.7... true story.....

I now power shift almost straight up, instead of going to my right.

Well, upon further examination, the decel whine is very similar on the engine whether the clutch is in or out, accel whine is much louder clutch engaged. I think it's that fat old fly-wheel just loading the engine more. Found a YouTube of a 370Z TO bearing sound and mine is identical. No worries, and I doubt I did anything more than slip the clutch a bit. Not even enough to smell it. One pass down the drag strip would probably "hurt" the car far worse. If that minor mishap kills something, it had a problem to begin with.

In case you were wondering...I have not slept much today. I need to not post things right now :P

ah yes, all that extra energy must have disappeared into a magical hole in the space time continuum where bad energy goes, rather than absorbed in the clutch or synchros like it would in a normal vehicle.

The TOB noise is normal. I've been in 20+ Z's and every single one did it.

It was absorbed in a half second or so of clutch slip. Nothing an all-out run at the drag strip wouldn't do far worse than. Car is fine, you instigating bastard

Meh, I just don't know how durable these cars are/aren't when it comes to the driveline.
