Which oil to choose? Oil gurus, please, chime in!
Hello! Trying to choose the better oil for my VQ35HR engine (I believe, it is similar in oil requirements):
- Motul Eco-Clean 5w30 C2 - "ACEA A5 / B5 / C2 - APPROVALS API SM / CF RECOMMENDATIONS: Peugeot and Citroen HDi engines with or w/o Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). ACEA developed ACEA C2 standard for lubricants with low friction, low HTHS (< 3.5 mPa.s), reduced Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur content (Mid SAPS). Do not mix with lubricants not ACEA C2 compliants." - Motul X-Max 0w40 - "STANDARDS API SM/CF - ILSAC GF-4 APPROVALS FORD M2C WSS 937 A (FORD FOCUS RS 2.5 Duratec) RECOMMENDATIONS NISSAN, JAGUAR, LAND-ROVER, FORD. Numerous OEMs such as NISSAN, JAGUAR, LAND-ROVER, etc… recommend to use a lubricant with 0W-40 viscosity grade and API SM for most of their sporty vehicles like for example the NISSAN GT-R, 370Z, 350Z,… MOTUL 8100 X-max 0W-40 formulation is the perfect balance between fuel economy linked to its viscosity grade and outstanding lubrication (high HTHS > 3.5 mPa.s)." There's explanation of HTHS here: Welcome to Motul , but the main question is which is better for our engines - low HTHS (< 3.5 mPa.s) - Eco-Clean or high HTHS ( > 3.5 mPa.s) - X-Max? |

Motul's good, but most people went with Redline. Personally i use HKS's and they work great. |

Guys, I know about Redline and Castrol, but I need to choose between these two oils: with the low HTHS (< 3.5 mPa.s) - Eco-Clean or with the high HTHS ( > 3.5 mPa.s) - X-Max. Which would be better?
"The concept exists of High HTHS and Low HTHS: A low HTHS oil has a lower viscosity at high temperature (<3.5 mPa.s) than that of a so-called High HTHS oil (>3.5 mPa.s). Please note that the “mPa.s” is a unit to measure viscosity. This notion is important as it allows for the classification, on the one hand, of fuel economy oils having a low HTHS and, on the other hand, of high protection oils having a high HTHS." |

Your statement is a little vague. "Oil is pretty much oil" Yea as in they all lubricate but I'm pretty sure some do that in better ways then others along with temp control engine cleaning ability and the length the oil can last. If oil was pretty much all the same AMG, Dodge Viper, Corvettes etc would all come factroy filled with AutoZone Valuecraft oil rather then Mobil1

but you're right... it was a vague statement... it was meant to get people off of the brand name focus and on to what type of oil each person actually needs. its based on driving type.. like Nick911 said... go read Last edited by ryan0; 02-28-2012 at 12:07 PM. |

I've spent a lot of time over on BITOG and done lots of analysis on the oil in my own cars.
I've found Penzoil Platinum to work wonderfully even for 10,000 mile oil change intervals and I will be using that in my Z in 5W30 with a Purolator Pure One oil filter. They don't make a Penzoil Platinum in 10W40 which the built motor in my supercharged Challenger needs, so I use Mobil1 there as it came out 2nd best in my oil tests over about 5 years of testing. Amzoil, Redline, Royal Purple, Motul, are all fine oils, but they're boutique oils and I find the cost for benefit not so good. I can walk in to Wally World and grab a 5qt jug of both Penzoil Platinum and Mobil1 and call it good. My .02 cents no change for your 5. |

Ok, thanks for your comments, though no one really helped me in choosing
Anyway, I'm leaning towards Motul X-Max 0w40 - hope this viscosity would be good for our engine, but feel free to comment my choice |
