The reason im wanting the change is because my mother was in an collision where they destroyed her Solara. Shes been going thru some stuff as it is and now she wont be able to get another car. She likes my car but she has never been able to drive cars with MT and now at 50+ yrs its harder and specially in a Z. Im gonna shop around for a wrecked Z to see if its cheaper to buy parts or take a hit and trade it in for something else. The car is right at trade in value so everything Ive payed in will be lost, like if I leased it. I was thinking something around 3-4k in parts, am i way off?

A very noble reason, not that you owe any one here an explanation.

Wish I could help on switch out cost...way over my head talent wise, so would have no clue as to what is needed. I would lean towards trading to make it simpler and quickest...guess it would depend on actual cost to make it happen versus cash needed to get into and auto if you trade.

Good luck !

I'm sure even a dealer with a few pre-owned Z' on there lots would gladly do a trade under the circumstances... it never hurts to try. Of course it would have to be a very comparable Z. As hard as it is to believe... there are still nice people out there. Lol

You really think they would trade me? I put down the some of the money im thinking of using for the conversion, and give them my car and walk out with an automatic Z? Mine is the touring with 24,650 miles. thats a really good idea you gave me there im gonna make some calls tomorrow to see what they say. I want to come out even not loose money to a stealer. The car will stay in the family regardless so no loss on passing on the car.

I would guess it would be $3k - $4k just for the transmission, based on the rebuilt I bought before for the NSX. The labor will definitely kill you.

Trade is the only way.

There are tons of Auto 370z out there for-sale and very few 6 speeds. Have a look around, Autos are much cheaper also.

What im afraid if i get her something cheaper then she'll be having reliability issues. I know the z wont give out. I havent had a single issue with it.

It will probably be cheaper to just buy or Lease her a car of her own. Good Luck with whatever happens.

OP buy her an older civic or accord, cheap, reliable and easy to find in auto. Parts are so cheap, you can spend 2500 on car and do 500 worth of maint and still keep your car.

elmz 02-21-2012 10:53 AM

This question comes up on every car forum. Out of curiosity, has anyone known someone to actually do it?

+1

Plenty of cheap/relaible cars are out there you should ask around in your regional forum.

I've seen a Z that converted a 6MT to a dog style sequential gearbox, but I highly doubt that would be useful to the OP.. lol. Also, it cost about 7.5K.

phunk 02-21-2012 06:37 PM

it would probably be cheaper and easier to swap it to a 2-speed drag racing auto.

'merica!
