2012 Oil cooler
Has anyone added a Z1 Motorsports Oil cooler to the 2012 (with the factory oil to water cooler). The factory oil cooler seems like it will be completely insufficient for any track use (let alone when temps hit 116 here in Phoenix).
Will the factory cooler need to be removed? Or can the the auxiliary cooler be added on top of the factory cooler? |

I think this has been discussed before and that it will require a second sandwich plate adapter or a blockoff of the stock cooler. That is going to increase the chance of an oil leak and move the filter way out but it should be dooable. You can check by simply looking at the stock filter to see if there is about 2-3 inches of room to add an adapter... other than that you have all the same clearances as any other Z.

Mainly around 200-210, but I'm babying the car during the break in period and temps here in AZ have been around 60-70 degrees. When it hits 114 outside, and I'm stuck in traffic, there is no way its going to stay between 180-200 degrees.

IMO I'd upgrade the cooling system first to see if that sustains it (bigger fan/radiator). If not then I would upgrade the cooler. I like the idea of the water cooler bringing the oil up to running temp.

get a second one to double capacity? it's probably a surface area not a delta issue with those coolers.

There are no issues whatsoever installing our oil cooler kit onto a 2012. I am working on an install manual amendment for the 2012 cars right now.
The ONLY difference on the install will be the orientation of the sandwich plate. Due to the inclusion of the factory oil cooler, the sandwich plate is positioned out slightly and will not allow for the same orientation. |

Cool, thanks Dustin. I'm wondering if the factory cooler will function as a quasi-thermostatic plate in its own right (ie ~200 degree water is going to circulate around the oil)?

It very well should. As we all know, the oil temps generated by these cars and greatly exceed the coolant temps (300*F v. 220*F). The cooler coolant temps (>230*F) helps to pull some of the heat out of the oil. HOWEVER, keep in mind. As the heat is extracted from the oil, the heat then raises the temp of the coolant. With this increase in heat due to the higher oil temps, this will only stress the coolant system further. A thermostatic sandwich plate would offer some benefits still, but I would probably go for a non-thermostatic on the MY2012+ cars if cost was a concern.
