Ester Oil / Mobile1 - Interesting Link

*sigh* Lets all whine over the cost of a maintenance item that is less than 3% of the value of the MSRP for the entire ownership of the item.

Taking a look at the way over $30,000+ cars that come with Mobil 1 from the factory - Like every single new Porsche etc. The racing they do etc. Mobil 1 should do the job of just driving and having fun in this car. That would include my occasional trek to the Nurburgring here in Germany on a warm day for a lap or 2.

You cannot go wrong with any major or exotic brand(Redline) or with the Nissan Ester which I will use for 2 more changes until the car hits about 30,000 kilometers miles etc.

I will switch at that point to something like Mobil-1/Redline/German Castrol etc. Drive, enjoy, and forget whats in the crank case. You will sleep well and I guarantee the world will turn overnight!

The corvettes at Spring Mountain all run stock spec Mobil 1. They have yet to lose an engine in the C6 platform. 12-14K track/paddock miles per car before they are sold.

It works okay I guess.

There's a reason why this is:

Mobil 1 Synthetic Motor Oil is Factory Fill in 40 Plus Car Models

But let's hear from the "Conspiracy Theorists"

I ran my car with Nissan Ester oil for the break in period. After that, i have been running it with Mobil 1 ow-40. Even driving in a 97-100F and heat index above 110F weather, my oil temp hover at 230F. No oil comsumption issue either. Knock on wood.

If people think my car won't last long with Mobil 1, so be it.

I just want to say one last thing. I'm not saying Mobil1 is overall a bad oil. I'm not liking the overall performance of that oil in this particular application with the Z. Being in tx, if the oil can't keep my car cool enough I won't use it or recommend it. Me being in 100+ degree weather, it doesn't hold up to snuff. I get 11 to 15 degrees cooler temps on other brands. But I also drive pretty hard. I just feel if it doesn't handle extremes well (in the Z) under harsh conditions why use it?
The vette probably has way better transmission and oil cooling systems than the Z. The vette ALSO doesn't rev as high. If the Z was a cooler running car and didn't rev as high as it does I'm sure mobil 1 would do better. But it doesn't so it isn't. Lol.
In the end mobil1 is not good due to the Z not being engineered as well in the cooling dept. But the Z's flaw has exposed some of this oils weakness and other oils strength.

Its amazing the amount of venom spat towards various oils on the inter tubes that people just don't like.

Mobil 1 is kind of the Microsoft of the oil world: fun to kick around as being inferior, more marketing then substance.

Its unfortunate because like many companies, Mobil makes some very good blends and some very consumer blends. UOA's show it may break down faster then brand X but its still holding up and engines are not throwing rods left and right.

People that do this for a living (you know, engineering types with degrees and all) know what is good and what is not, and they still produce and use the product.

A Z06 rev's to 7K...not that far from the 370's 7500. Euro spec P cars have run it for years. Some BMWs. I have a combined 350K miles across high output Honda, Mazda, and subaru engines all running M1 5/30, 10/30, or 0/30 at various times with OCI's varying from 5-7500 miles. Not too shabby for something I buy from walmart

My Z is getting PP, partially due to some of the UOA's I read and partially because its something new to try and $2 per 5qt less expensive then the M1. I did put M1 in the first change since I had it on hand, but when driving it 3K every 6 months on the street, you honestly could run walmart blue bottle and it would be just fine. My oil temps were not any different over the summer with M1 vs the PP I put in at the end of the summer.

The more expensive oil gives us peace of mind when we hammer on it. That is the rationalization we use Some cars do run warmer then others, so if one particular lube shows to work better in your particular car great...doesn't mean another oil can't work equally well in other cars.

^ Agreed.. use what works for you in your application. I think thats good advise.

For me being a new Z owner I am going to run M1 and see how that works - If I start running hot then I'll try redline.

Spring Mountain is about 45 minutes outside of Vegas.

The Z06 revs to 7K rpm and covers a lot longer stroke, thus the piston is moving faster than in your 370Z.

Yes, it does have a better cooling system, but we still saw 270+*F oil temps. Mobil 1 did fine.

Do you have UOA's to support your claims about the 370Z performing poorly with Mobil 1?

Your oil may be 10-15* cooler with other brands, but what do the wear numbers look like? I agree, if the only difference is temp, use the other brands! I am also not telling you I think you are wrong, I am simply asking for a bit more info.

Have you tried Nissan's Ester oil, how did that do? It has gotten ripped a new one on BITOG and other sites where people post actual data.

VQ37VHR UOA question - Bob Is The Oil Guy

^Read that thread. The Nissan Ester stuff is performing VERY poorly when you look at the actual wear data and how the oil is holding up (It's not).

Basically, your "Nissan Ester" stuff is a group III oil with "Ester" in it. Who knows how much? Apparently not a ton of it. It shears easily, the TBN drops like a brick, and it's just not a very good oil, really. The 5-30 DEXOS stuff from Mobil 1 is far superior in every way once you get past the emotional aspect.

I used canola oil in a pinch, once, but went back to astroglide once I could make it to the store.
