6th to 5th grind
18k miles 6mt touring/sport pkg, only when shifting from 6th to 5th i'll get a small grind but the gear goes in without a problem. Yes the clutch is pressed in all the way and it seems to only do it once each time i drive and after (on the 2nd, 3rd etc) time when downshifting from 6-5 it's without the grind.
It is not a big grind just a little one...is this normal'ish? I really don't want to go to the dealer and try to replicate it and wait on a day off all day in their waiting room if its nothing to bother myself with. p.s. its only on the downshift between these two gears never on a upshift. |
Where are you located? Other than "In a house"....
Depending on the dealer they should have seen this grinding before and shouldn't give you too much crap about replacing the whole transmission. |
Unless your warranty is running out soon, I would just try and live with it for a little while, then go in once it gets bad enough that it is a problem

There are some other threads about this:
http://www.the370z.com/engine-drivet...ing-shift.html http://www.the370z.com/engine-drivet...nsmission.html Mine is about at the end of warranty - it's going in finally. Grinding hasn't improved, but hasn't gotten worse either. I'll post updates. --ZOM |

I didn't buy it used I drove it all those miles. It's a bit odd because it dosn't seem to matter if its warmed up or not, hot or cold outside it just happens every once and a while but only from 6th to fifth and i don't recall if it does it at high speeds more 55-47ish 6-5 shift lightly cruising. Should I really take it to the dealer or does it seem to be a normal trait for our cars?
|
Also... Would this be covered by the 3yr 36000 mile or 5 year 60000 mile powertrain warranty?
|
If you are still under warranty... why not take it in?
Don't let them just tell you that it's normal. Tell them you'll take a mechanic for a test drive and replicate the sound. |
I had a 2003 350z that had this exact issue start with the 3rd gear... I had NEVER mis-shifted so I knew it wasn't my fault... Needless to say it got worse and worse and eventually the synchro was shot... The transmission was replaced by the dealer with the updated transmission, clutch and one other part... All covered... Car had 18000 miles on it.
This is not something I would let slide. If you haven't already take it to the dealer and get this issue at least filed... Then if down the road it becomes completely shot then you have a case. Good luck -Chad |

Update: New transmission installed - works perfectly. DEFINITE difference.
If your gears are grinding and still in warranty, take it in. If not, my sympathies. --ZOM --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?c1qarm |

the new tranny feels different  than the origional stock one though... feels less tight when shifting between 5 and 6 back and forth IMO. |
