Fluids (Engine/Trans/Diff)
On my Z06, I changed the oil at 585mi. Because I wanted to.
I plan on doing something very similar when I buy a 370Z, Except I will go to 1200 miles. At that point, I feel that a majority of the polishing of the gears and internal parts on the engine/diff/trans will have occurred and the bulk of excess metals will be shed into the fluid. Engine: I am very set on Pennzoil Ultra 5-30. I have reviewed many UOA's and it destroys Mobil 1 as well as Nissan's "Ester" oil in wear #'s. If you have another suggestion, and the UOA to back it up, please inform me! Differential: I want to stick with OEM viscosity. What is it? I also want the BEST lubricant possible for this. I plan on leaving it in there for the next 20K+ miles, so a few extra bucks won't bother me. The reason I am so bent on OEM viscosity is I had an '01 F-body that we changed diff fluid on. Went with 85-140 Royal Purple. It should have had something like 70-90 in it. The pinion bearing spun (backing out of the drive-way) and showed signs of a lot of excess heat, as did the rest of the diff. It also ate axles and wheel-bearings at the same time. I blame viscosity, and the fact that I hate oil with dye in it. I was younger and dumber and learned a good lesson. Just because it works in an ALMS car doesn't mean it works in your DD, and if it has purple or other colored dye in it as a marketing ploy---fail. Transmission: What are the synchro linings made of? If they are CF, or Bronze, I have no problem with a full synthetic, if they are paper, synthetic is always a bad idea in humid areas unless you change it often, as it is hydroscopic (as is paper), and synchros end up swollen and shifting goes to hell. So...first...what are the synchro's lined with, and second, what produces the cleanest shifts/best durability in this transmission? I guess I should also make sure it's not a sealed unit. Neither the diff, not the trans are sealed in the 6M, right? Both have drain/fill plugs? |
